The eldest chick has now left the nest and is happily exploring the floor of the cage and munching food, my problem is the cage has a very deep tray 6 1/2 ins (17 cms ) so it's a long way up to a perch. He hasn't got any wire to help him climb eventually. Should I put something on the floor to help him climb? also I mentioned before that there isn't much room for a gazunder but so far there aren't any problems with the adults.

Ruby I am going to move this to "breeding". You may get better responses there.

Try to put a smaller perch at 3 inch level so it becomes a step to 6 inch high perch.

Or post a picture to see how it looks like.

Thank you all for the advice. I think I paniced earlier because when I went to check on him he'd gone back in the nest box ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) I've been watching him since and he keeps popping out to eat off the floor where there is soft food and water then flying up to the perch, with no problem, to eat seed. Then back into the nest box to squawk at dad for more food, which he gets! He's done this 4 times in a couple of hours.

Sounds like a smart little one. He's found his food and drink, and still gets more from dad. Good job, Ruby.

Sorry for the delay in replying BB. Twinkle was 31 days (now 33) he is eating everything he can with no problems at all, Tweetie, also now 31 days has left the nest. They are flying well and managing on the perches. I've been a bit distracted because of feather mite in their dad. I had absolutely no idea it was mites because he hasn't scratched or lost any feathers and he is an indoor bird. The last couple of days it has become much worse. I was advised by Barrie to treat all the birds wih 'Spot on' which I have done today. The 6 chicks don't appear to have any mites but I will keep a close watch. I've dosed 9 adults and they all seem a bit quiet and subdued, their skin where the spot on was put looks very red and sore. I normally do not like to use chemicals on any of our pets but I realise it was needed this time. Do you know of any other way to get rid of these mites? Is it possible to bathe the bird to wash them away? ......any advice would be gratefully appreciated ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Spot on treatment is the best and most effective way.

Thank you BB, oh well it looks as if I'll have to get used to using the 'spot on' then ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) the birds are much happier tonight, eating and singing as if nothing has happened to them. The treatment says it lasts for 4 weeks, does that mean I'll have to treat Freddie again or should one dose clear the mites?

You're welcome ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) The preventive dosage is one drop every six months. The treatment dosage is from 3 to 4 weeks as it says on your package. You will also have to disinfect the cage, perches, feeding bowls, etc.

Thank you Bb. The youngest chick will be 28 days in 6 days time ad I'm hoping to move all the chicks and parents into a more suitable much larger cage for a few weeks. The cage and perches are new so won't need disinfecting, I will dispose of the nest box and perches from the cage they're in now.

That's right, the ones not used won't require disinfecting.
