Well what a day, quite a big job to convert this cage, luckily the cage plastic drawer and base plate were perfect fit as cage ends. After taking them out the cage was pretty flexible as the rigidity was gone from legs and roof bolts, had to put 8 nuts and bolts to uprights making it rigid again as well as getting the vinegar out for metal end plate. Have lost the pull out drawer for base but 2 large front doors make putting paper in easy, had to raid my shed to fit 2 stainless steel plates to cover the base so that worked out a godsend and were only 5mm out on width so no cutting necessary. Here are photos of cage currently, only things I still need to do is cap off sharp exterior edges, get a larger light tube and a cover for the light ballast. I have lost a couple of inches in length from 48" to 46"ish but still better than upright in my opinion. The birds are in and enjoy flying from side to side and is noticable compared to the upright version. left end Right end base front on

It does look good, Bill. I must admit to being sceptical to start with, but it has turned out well. Great innovation there - well done you!

That looks really good I wasn't sure it would work but it does! I have a similar cage and have often thought of doing the same thing but I'm not as brave as you I don't know why manufacturers make them tall instead of wide, the birds have more flying room while they're in the cage if it's wider rather than taller. How many birds do you keep in te cage?

Well done bill, i think you have done a brilliant job with the cage and these companies that make cages should make all the cages horizontal so our feathered friends have more space to fly around instead of flying up and down.your two budgies will have so much fun in there. Sue

That is soooo much better. They'll really like the extra space, I bet. Brilliant work.
So much easier to hang perches and seed bowls, etc, as well.
