I always thought that Dettol is not an avian safe disinfectant. Just read on a website and I quote... "Dettol should also be used to clean your Budgies cage when treating mites as it is harmless for the birds and really kills the mites." Is this true? Anyone had any experience with it?

Anyone had any experience with it? i have used it in the past but prefer to use poultry shield, pour a drop into a bucket of water when cleaning and everything gets treated ,KILLS MITES DEAD.

I use it, but wash everything after disinfecting with Dettol, as I think it is not birds safe.
My question still, is Dettol bird safe?
There are no avian disinfectants available here, so it will make my life very easy, if it really is safe for birds.

I ve been using dettol for about 4-5 months, maybe more. How i use it.It a small pot or plastic dish i put only a little and mix it wwith water.I dip thee brush in it and brush the wire floor of the cages.Birds are fine.
Before that,i v been using topine plus for many years with the same system. The one which is 3 in 1,not the newer 4 in 1,which is much stronger.Birds were in perfect shape.
I have to say that after i brush the wire floor with topine (or dettol) and water,i don t wash it with clean water.Haven t noticed anything.I wash with clean water only after i ve cleaned the cages with chlorine and water, which is the only sure disinfectant, and very strong.
Thank you

I wouldn't believe Dettol to be safe as it is bleach and has strong fumes. I use F10scxd which is fantastic. It is a little expensive but one bottle lasts ages as you only need to use a tiny bit each time. Here is a link for info on F10 www.f10biocare.co.uk/ however I bought mine off ebay and it is fantastic, especially for my aviary, it just dissolves the poop, it disinfects and is completely safe to use around budgies

I agree with rach and barrie, although i would also say avisafe (the bird care company) . Are the main ones i relay on . I would amagine dettol to be safe, but i would probably (as panos does) dillute it slightly, and make sure it dries completely before the birds re enter. Dettol is supposed to be safe for kids,(or atleast that's what the advert portrays) But i wouldn't advise a mother to let her kid/baby to lick/be near wet dettol . The local high school even uses it in the biology "labs". Im not aware of it containing bleach though.

I couldn't find any indication of bleach in Dettol, and one of treatments for scaley face is dabs of dettol. I have also read of owners cleaning budgies wounds with it. As long as the right dilution is used, I think it would be okay.

I forgot to mention that, while i brush the floors with the dilluted dettol or topine, birds are in their cages.I don take them out to somewhere else,i just make sure i don t brush them.It dries insteantly.Dettol is safe for kids,so i believe it s safe also for birds, and topine has instructions saying that you can even clean the pet s rooms and food or water containers with it,so it s safe.I know you might think what i say is wrong or crazy, but they re things I ve been doing for a long time and I can make a ruther safe conclusion.I clean the cages floors once a week, and you can imagine how difficult it would be to move the birds somewhere else especially during mating season, when they have chicks.I m talking mostly bout canaries and goldfinches, which are much more sensitive than budgies.
Thank you

Thank you What sort of dilution do you make up with the dettol? I don't think you are crazy - you have obviously found a method that works for you and that's the main thing. If you could let us know what dilution you use it may help others in the future. Not all disinfectants are available world wide, but I am pretty sure you could get dettol in most places.
