Barrie always says that a birds stomach is as big as his head But it's better to leave the food in there all the time.

Thanks BB we must have a lot of big headed budgies then ;D There is always seed in the pots, but I seem to waste a lot as I throw it out every morning and put fresh in. There's usually a bit left but I've given up trying to blow the husks away as I always end up with my face and hair full of them I'm buying more seed now as there are more mouths to feed and was thinking of ways to not waste by giving them just what they need as well as fruit and veg of course!

It is very upsetting when they waste the seeds. My breeding pairs always waste a lot more seeds than others. They look for the ones which they think is right at that stage of breeding. Non breeding young one do so too. Since I have started using the tall bottles, the wastage has dropped significantly. But some still do it. Perhaps 2 teaspoons per budgie per day would be enough, for smaller budgies.

Thanks BB. Got my maths head on and worked out they're getting about the right amount I use hook on trays for their food but like the idea of using a bottle like yours, there would be less waste. I use a bottle for water but will try the food in one as well. The youngest chick likes to sleep in one of the seed trays, she doesn't look very comfy but manages to squeeze in after kicking out most of the seed I'll leave it empty for her till she stops

They get this much space and it's hard to throw the seeds out or poo in it.

I love that seed jar BB but I can't find one like it anywhere. The only ones I have seen don't have a wide enough base at the bottom....I'll keep looking Thankyou

Some of that type of set-up are designed for water, Ruby, that's why the base isn't big enough. The husks just clog up the flow of seed. I had that problem a while back; it was promoted as seed/water holder, but wasn't suitable for seed at all.

For one bird, I feed a little bit more than two teaspoons per day, and just give him a fresh clean bowl every morning. Most days, it seems to be a teeny bit more than the amount he wants to eat. I feel in the seed bowl with my fingers, and I can tell if he's eaten it all or not.
He's also getting a piece of millet, fruit and vegies, fresh eucalyptus and seeding grasses hung up in his cage daily, plus he gets to eat either egg and toast or porridge with us at breakfast. So he ain't going hungry, that's for sure.
The blowing husk off thing wasn't working for me - messy, time consuming, and seemed to blow out good seed with the husk.

That looks really interesting seed BB. Is it one you mix yourself? What are the green bits in it?

Thanks Hezz I can see what you mean about using one for seed, and we'd need about a dozen round the cage! I've found a couple of feeders online with a wide tray at the bottom but they're made for a certain cage type and wouldn't suit ours
