One of my three budgies has been very sick/having seizures for about 10 months...a seizure lasts for probably about 10 minutes and then he recovers for a few hours.. and ends up completely normal by the next day. Sometimes he looks a bit "oily" or wet... and just generally sick.. but he is always perched.. and hangs out with his two mates chatting away. He is a very happy bird and enjoys flying around when he is not having a seizure.
I live in New Zealand... the city I live in we have found no suitable avian vets (perhaps 1...but he is always busy). We have taken him to the vet before - he was given antibiotics and steroids...
I do not feel like his quality of life is low although I am very worried about him hurting himself whilst having a seizure out of his cage... he did that today and I am still very shaken about it - so is he.
At the moment he is perched in a cage with his friends.. having a well deserved sleep.
We took him in from a friend who could no longer offer him a loving home... we have no idea how old he is.. but the vet told us he is underweight.
I am wondering whether we should take him for a trip to a bigger city to an avian vet or to continue to treat him as we usually do when he has a seizure (put him in a comfortable shoebox and nurse him until he starts moving around a bit more - then we put him back in his clean cage to find his feet again). I am curious whether anybody has encountered the same problem or knows what the problem is?
I am very proud of how resilient Ming Ming is...but I'm worried...as I really really hate to see him in pain and so confused (but now he looks.. okay and is eating etc).
