Grass is the best! I have made a rod for my own back with the grass - I spend anything from half to a full hour a day collecting their damn grass! Mostly it is not an issue; sometimes it is.

Such brilliant advice, have just lost a 10 year old budgie who only ever ate seed and millet. Just about to home a baby budgie so want to start in the right heathy way and offer all sorts of foods for health and variety so this helps loads. Thank you

How often should I give fresh fruit & vegetables ? I offer leafy greens every day. They get fruit or carrot once or twice a week, as too much sugar isn't good for them. I either clip whole leaves/pieces to the cage or chop them up and mix them with eggfood or another supplement like Clay-cal.

Give them a little often, rather than a lot infrequently. But mix it up; don't give them the same thing day in, day out, unless what you are feeding them is a good variety in itself. And don't forget things like sprouts. They are good for the birds, good for you as well, if there is plenty left over.

My birds LOVE baby leaf spinach, can`t have enough of it. They literally rip it out of my hand as I am trying to pin it up to the cage. However I don`t want to give it to them every day, especially since reading that spinach can hinder calcium absorption in the gut.
I have been trying a number of items from the list at the beginning of the topic, but the little buggers just don`t want to eat anything else. I tried chopped and grated carrots, apple, banana, strawberry, green pepper etc, but if it is not green they do`nt even try it, and if it is green but not spinach they don`t take more than a few tasting bites.
So they are on a diet of seed, millet and spinach. They are still very young, so I hope this will change.

I think baby spinach is actually okay, as it is not real spinach. I think. But put something in with the spinach so they have to get through the something else to get their fill of the stuff they like. They are clever little beggars, so you have to be doubly crafty to trick them into trying new things. Why not mix some basil in, or some other leafy herbs? Something similar to the baby spinach ..... any of the Asian Greens are great, as well.

Basil might be a great substitute to the spinach, it's very nutritious and smells lovely too.
Mine love it.

Can my budgies eat the seed heads of a thistle plant

Absolutely! Milk thistle is one of the best liver detox's out there and all of the thistles are helpful to lesser extent. Thistles are abundant where I am at the moment and while I'm not sure that the budgies are touching them, my conure goes for them first.

My Charlie absolutely loves basil, he is fussy when it comes to his greens so it’s nice to have found something besides spinach that he likes......I am growing it myself now. It’s a variety called Isabella . My kitchen smell lovely!

Sitting in the garden with Stuart and I've wedged mint, spinach, coriander, rocket, and basil through the bars of his cage.... Interested? Not on your life. The only veg I've successfully got him to eat is carrot and my spider plant!
