Hi everyone! I've had my budgies a while now and I am still keen on breeding Sparky before he is too old (2011 rung skyblue - violet) with a good violet hen. He was bred for showing purposes; from the first clutch of a newly introduced blood line of violets. In your opinion - do you think he is show quality?? I bought him cheeep from a BS member as he had selected his show birds and Sparky was spare. I loved the whole set up and I would like to gradually build up a little flock of perfectos. My aim is to keep a small flock of show quality violets going - It's all well and good reading about keeping and breeding them, but I'm sure I will need plenty of first-hand knowledge and hands-on experience if anyone has a little time to spare please? - I'm hoping Nigelsstud will be available on occasions?? as I only live 20 mins away Many thanks in advance, Fiona

Sparky is a beauty, i think he is show quality , i love the pic of him with his little friend peeping down from the top of the cage. And im very envious that you live just 20mins from Nigelsstud I have no good breeders near me.

He has the most beautiful colour. I don't know how it works at shows in the UK but in Australia, violets are shown as 'normal violet' and is higher on the list than opaline, so in Australia he would be shown in the opaline section.

Thanks for your lovely comments and advice everyone It would be such a shame not to try and breed off Sparky, I only bought him as a pet (probably the picked-on-bird) but I think he has good features and he's become a fine young male. Nigel, that would be great if you could have a look for me! Barrie, I tried the breeder again but he hasn't got any for sale at the moment unfortunately. Anyway, I need to get set up with 2 box cages and all the supplies I may need before getting a lovely young hen, so that may take me a month or so to shop around, although I want to hand tame her before introducing her to Sparky, so I might get her sooner - if I can find one suitable Do you suggest I keep Speedy completely away from Hen? As he is not for breeding but he's a feisty little fella! I'm afraid he might get in there first and we'll have small stripy bellied mauve greywings!
