The second one is better, with a perch inside and outside, as you said. You can always make your own

I don't know if they are made of MDF, but soft MDF is not good.

I'd say the first one is defiantly MDF and possibly the second one too.

Nicola, how about talking to your friendly pet-shop person and see what they say? Take your father along with you; he should be able to tell you whether they are MDF, chipboard, or the real thing. I think the first is what you may see in hardware stores called chipboard or particleboard, and the second craftboard. I wouldn't use either.
Do you have a handyman's gene? Is your father or someone close handy with tools? It seems to me if you can't find what you want then maybe get someone to make one or two for you.
Does anyone know if plywood is safe?

Plywood has formaldehyde in it.

Beautiful nest box BB. All of my nest boxes are made from plywood, and are mostly homemade. I have seen plastic and tin nest boxes also.

So plywood is perfectly safe? That's a yes from both BB and Rachel. Do the buds ever nibble on them? BB, those are little hooks on the front to attach to the cage? I like this box too ....... if I were a budgie, of course.......

Some people like it as it is easy to clean and disinfect. But for me it is not natural. And also these plastic ones can change temperature very quickly.

I like this box too ....... if I were a budgie, of course....... Yes it is safe and quite strong as my buds never seemed to take a part off it, although some hens would nibble on the entry hole just before going inside for the first time. We leave the edges to outside as well and from inside there is no way to split an edge. Yes these hooks are used to attach it to cage bars and then cage side as well as the perch under entry hole hold the weight. You are welcome to use it at anytime. I can always make a bigger one
