Tom is over the moon - he went into the nest box a few times and continues to check on emy and the chick he's flying (hovering side to side) around the cage like a mad man making funny noises

the first to hatch died a few minutes ago. from what i can see Tom grabbed him and threw him out the nest box (ALIVE). I warmed the chick up but it only lasted a few minutes. I have now taken Tom out of the cage and I'll keep a very close eye on Emy to make sure she's ok. She had fed the chick (i could see crop milk in the chick). I think the fall from Tom throwing him had damaged his internals too much so all my work to try and save him was in vain not a nice feeling at all but we still got 8 to go so hopefully she'll be ok with them.

It is very sad. Don't put the cock back in the breeding cage. The hen will feed the chicks on her own. Give her plenty of soft food. If you don't want to fully hand feed, you can hand feed the elders, once or twice a day and put them back in the nest box. This will reduce the burden on the hen.

Looks good. Just remember to serve soft food in small quantities and remove after two hours to avoid decay.

I have tried supplying with the soft food moist and dry and she won't eat it. she only seems interested in the seed. Is there anything I can do to "force" her to eat the soft food or is it not a good thing to do? I don't mean actually force it into her mouth but just leave soft food only and no seed. she is eating millet. Another hatched last night and squeaked alot but I can't hear it squeaking this morning so i'm going to check on it shortly.

Keep giving her and she will start eating it soon. No forcing

ok thx BB. I have given her a choice of 3 seed bowls with celery and kiwi fruit, 2 water supplies and the soft food so she can't grumble about not having enough food

That's good. My breeding hens have access to at least three foods all the times and they choose what they want
