Strawberries are fine for the budgies, but gee, they would have to get past me first! Mine, the few times I have willed myself to allow them some, always seemed more interested in picking out the little black seeds, than the rest of the fruit. I'm happy to share... after all the birds on the allotment have had quite a few from the old un-netted strawberry bed so I don't begrudge the budgies a nibble / splat and splish. We made several pots of jam from the last lot and there's 8 or 9lbs from today's picking so plenty to go round. Shame I can't email a bowl full to you.

Aw ........ that would be nice! I have home-grown grapefruit and passionfruit from my neighbours at the moment. A few strawberries would fit very nicely in there. With that many to share out, I would probably now begrudge the budgies a strawberry or two either.

One more step along the road we go..... PVC corrugated plastic roof in place: Looks like it will do the job pretty well

It looks nearly finished...what's left to do? You have both done a great job.

The plastic sheet on the outside flight will allow the sun and light but will stop the droppings of wild birds. Well done

I glimpsed the car through my parents kitchen window a second before my father announced that his grandson had arrived. The boot swung up and then......a large, neat looking timber frame emerged and made its way to the back of the bungalow with my son underneath. (Why is my camera always in the wrong place when I want it?) Half an hour later..... another step in the right direction. Perfeck!!

He's a good lad, that boy of yours. It really is coming on a treat.

He's a good lad, that boy of yours. It really is coming on a treat. "We" are getting there.. Without my son's efforts and skills I'd probably still be thumbing through my library book looking at pictures of budgies and day-dreaming of one day having an aviary.

Next I need to borrow my wife's heavy duty stapler and buy some longer staples as I think stapling the wire mesh on would be best. The timber isn't heavy and I don't want to risk splitting it. Also: I'm considering painting the frame with a wood-stain. Any thoughts on this? I think it'll look posher and perhaps help to preserve the wood. The disadvantage will be yet more time. Hezz I'm still thinking about that home-grown grapefruit and passionfruit. Wonderful!

Looking good learner , re the stapler , the best staples are the ones that are U shaped for telephone cables , I find them easier and better than the normal shaped staples ....if you know any phone guys or satellite guys they would give you some staples I'm sure

I've used U shaped galvanised staples on the outside flight where the timbers will take them easily. The inner frame is lighter. My wife uses staplers for upholstery - she also has a pneumatic stapler that belts out quite a punch and takes very hefty staples. I'll have a try out over the week-end. If this idea appears not to be working I'll search for those U shaped lighter weight staples that you mention. Thanks for the tip.
Have you posted any pictures of your birds in the new aviary gary? Sounds excellent!!
