I've just been reading a report that parts of Sydney are at risk from the fires, and that this season is expected to be the worst on record. Let's hope not in both cases. I have absolutely no comprehension on the size or layouts of the Cities in Australia, but it must be serious the way it is being reported. I trust all our Australian friends are OK and continue to be. I'm like you Pops, I have a brother in Ballerat but have no idea how close that is to the bush fires. It's always a worry for me.

Sydney sits right on the coast in the middle of the state of New South Wales. The serious fires are essentially burning in a circle around Sydney. Up and down the coast and up to around 80km inland to the West from the CBD. This is considered greater Sydney as from around 80km is commuting distance from the city centre. The population density starts increasing the further towards the coast you go.
These fire fronts have the potential to grow to be 100kms wide, so it is potentially extremely serious.

Ballarat is okay. That's further down South in the state of Victoria.

Wishing Australia some of our rain - looks as if you could do with a few days down-pour to dampen the lot down.
Stay safe.

According to the reports there's not any likelihood of rain in the near term and if anything the heat is going up. There are a lot of people already lost everything and it looks likely to get worse. I don't want to scare you Stace, but is the fire likely or possible to encroach on the built up area?

I don't want to scare you Stace, but is the fire likely or possible to encroach on the built up area? It is a possibility. 80km away is already the satellite suburbs. Moving in just 20km from that and you're getting into more regular suburbs. It gets more and more dense, the closer to the coast you go. Sydney city is right on the Eastern Coast. To the west are the Western Suburbs - the most populated area of Sydney. One time, about ten years ago the fires came in around 8 or 9km or so from the city centre, into the North Shore of Sydney (it's on the other side of the city across the Harbour Bridge). I'm a couple of kms from the central city. There are large tracts of national park with "fingers" of bushland running into the normal city suburbs. That's how they have the potential to spread. Embers are carried in the air, depending on the wind direction, and can travel a long long way. If it reaches me here, we are in serious trouble. They keep talking about the fires joining up and forming some kind of mega fire with a 200km front. That could be apocalyptic.

Oh Stace, thinking of you and hope the winds and temp are good today and that the fires don't spread any further towards the city! My uncle lives in Cape Town right on the edge of table mountain on devils peak (his garden backs straight onto the national park). Every so often they have bad fires there too and it is terrifying for them (and us watching from afar). Although I don't think you can quite comprehend the situation unless you are in the thick of it, I do understand the angst. My thought and prayers to all the poor people who have been affected (and also the animals). Nature can be so cruel and unforgiving. Stay safe.

Just watching on tv now. Just hope they start calming down soon. Is it nearer to you? Or going in a different direction?

Thinking of you stace, the smoke must be a real problem now . I so hope they can contain it and understand that its in the Blue Mountains and just 50 miles from Sydney . I also feel so for the fire fighters they must be exhausted. Stay safe.
