Tweetie is beautiful Tweetie will take 4 to 6 weeks to settle completely, if not more. Younger budgies settle soon in new homes. Keep the cage back next to a wall, preferably in a corner and don't move it in the first weeks or so. The cere is behind bars so I can't say anything about gender. Put the seed mix in a bowl and not on the cage floor. My budgies walk comfortably on the wire floor and I put the news paper under the wires in the tray.

This is what I use. B didn't Like the cage feeders or metal bowl, which he used to sit in and not eat from

He/She looks a beauty. Tweetie is a very nice name. I have the very same cage as yourself and have the grid bottom in place. Although my budgie is a bit older he found the supplied seed pots without any bother and would feed from them as well. Joey (my budgie) is rather heavy footed and used to make quite a noise when he jumped down for his seeds. He got used to it quicker than I did. Nowadays I use the Silo feeder which is much easier for both of us. Paper at the bottom of the cage is personal preference I think. I don't have any because I find it easy to separate the top and bottom of the cage, vacuum out the loose bits and use diluted disinfectant (FS10) to wash the rest, including the grid. As I say it is personal preference and no doubt others will post theirs.

Well Tweetie has found the food bowl and had a taste, but I haven't seen any moves to the water bowl yet, but not worried. I've been around all morning, working on the computer which sits across from the cage, so I've been going over periodically to chat and get Tweetie used to me.
I know it's usually not recommended, but after seeing that my hand on the outside of the cage didn't bother Tweetie, I've been putting my hand in a few times to get Tweetie used to it. The budgie doesn't seem to be freaking out nor petrifying when it's in there. Sometimes it flies to the other perch, sometimes it just stays put and tolerates my hand being there. One time on the floor it walked over my hand, which I thought was very promising.
Tweetie seems to be a music fan. I have a mix of talk/music radio on, and all the chirps come when the songs are playing!

Oh, and when we change the newspaper later today, I'll try the paper underneath the wire. Thanks all for the praise of Tweetie's looks! I'll try and get a picture without the wires in the way later.

Don't worry re the water, they often don't appear to be drinking, although I spoon fed water for a few days after I brought B home as he was scared to move

Here's a better one through the plexiglass at the bottom of the cage. What do you think, boy or girl or still too young to tell for certain?

To my mind Tweetie is looking more like a boy at the moment, but I wouldn't put a lot of money on that!
It is encouraging that he / she is so confident - feeding, tweeting and tolerating your hand sound good. Perhaps the breeder had already been handling them?

Hi Andi, Welcome! We're new budgie owners too! Well they're a year old now but I'm still learning. Tweetie is beautiful, and the young look and bluey cere reminds me of ours when they were young! A couple of recommendations, read the stickies about food hygiene, millet cleaning, spores etc. There is so much to learn and no book can help you as much as these lovely people and experience. Definitely recommend iodine blocks, high quality seed or pellets, lots of veg but read the toxic list. Vegetables are great, red vegetables are good, red pepper, carrots (technically orange I know ) , it's the vitamins they need. Don't be surprised if you find at night tweetie hanging on side of cage for bed, we noticed ours there in the mornings in the first few weeks, and I couldn't understand how they hung on the bars all night Apparently it's a night safety thing of being as high up as possible. We moved one the plastic perches (same cage as you) to top corner only about 5 bars down. That has worked. Not to scare you! Just wish I'd known more at the beginning, my own fault.... I didn't come on here enough or ask the right questions. You will thoroughly enjoy tweety, and soon wonder how you ever didn't have a budgie! I am totally smitten!

I always remove the bars off the bottom of the cage so they have a proper cage floor to go down to if they want to peck around and chase a ping pong ball. You have to keep the floor reasonably clean of poops if they are going to do this though. The bars on the floor can be a hazard if they get a fright and flap around the cage and then land on the floor bars - they have been known to break a leg through this happening.
