Hmmmm, he should have been quarantined before allowing them to meet, and then only outside the cage to begin with. You really should have two cages so that the birds can get to know each other without invading each others' space. Separate them if you can, otherwise you are just going to have to be very vigilant and make sure there is no nasty business. Hens particularly do not like their space being invaded by a new bird. Make sure they do not fight.

This is why quarantine is so important - the stress of being moved can bring previously not obvious ailments to the fore.

I'm considering getting another budgie too, I've had Cookie for 5 months now, I think he was about 4 months old when I bought him. In my 20 years of owning budgies, I've never had one that so difficult to bond with and tame. He just about let's me put my hand on the cage. He spends the day in the kitchen window and comes in with us in the evenings, I sit and talk to him, but I just get the thousand yard stare! He won't play with any of his toys and just focuses on his friend in the mirror, especially when he's anxious. I bought him from a shop and he was with 4 other budgies, maybe he's missing them?
We often bird sit a canary and he seems to enjoy his company and copies him, and he seems to get very animated when the starlings pay a visit!
Is it time to get him a companion??

Probably. But you should not have the canary and Cookie in the same area ...... quarantine is a very important part of moving birds from place to place. If you do get Cookie a friend, you really must have this friend in a separate room with no contact for at least four weeks to be sure that the new bird is not carrying any diseases that may possibly be passed on to Cookie. This quarantine time is a good time to spend with the new bird and to start to get training under way. Moving a new bird from its home to a new place is a big cause of stress and these can allow any under-lying disease to get a hold on and cause the bird to succumb to the illness. While Cookie might not be a bird to take to humans, he is still your pet and you really need to be aware of what you do that may put his life at risk.

I'm planning on getting an extra cage and we can definitely accommodate an extra one in another room until the newbie can be introduced into Cookie's. I'll probably give him another month to see if see if there's any change in his behaviour. I'm hoping the new bird might encourage him to play and explore. I've only just managed to get him to eat lettuce!
