My sons guinea pig has just fallen off Kians lap and her leg is sticking out at an odd angle. We have a vet appointment at 2.45. Kian is very upset.

Oh no! I hope everything goes okay at the vets and its just a bad sprain. I don't know what they could do for a guinea pig, maybe splint it? x

She has broken it. The vet said there were 2 courses of action. We could have her PTS or confine her to a small cage for 3 weeks and let it heal. The bone has overlapped so she will have a shorter leg. We went with option 2. She is now in a bird cage and I have wrapped plaster round her leg as the vet didn't do anything to immobilise it. She said there is nothing that will stay on. But I thought it would be better to at least try and keep it still to give it some stability while it mends.

that's weird SQ. I've had my vet mend a broken leg for my dwarf rabbit. I would have thought they can mend the broken bone and plaster it until it heals.

Hmmm, it is odd but I have been reading up on it and a lot of vets do the same. She seems to be OK, just sitting munching on her hay. I've given her some cuttle bone and she has had a munch on it. Extra calcium must be a good thing.

When one of small animals broke a leg the vet used a paper clip as a splint. Hope she gets better.

Oh I do hope little Evie gets some rest and the leg mends quickly.

Poor Evie and poor Kian! He must be upset as well. I can't believe they didn't try to splint the leg, even wrap it up, poor little piggy. My vet splinted a budgie's leg for heavens sake. Anyway good for you trying and hope Evie recovers well.

Evie is as right a rain today. You wouldn't know anything had happened. She's such a cheerful happy little pig, nothing seems to keep her down. She is hopping round the small area she does have with her leg stuck out to the side. Eating all her veg and grass up like a good girl.

I'm very glad that you went for option 2! In this day and age it must be easily fixable. As long as she's happy and not in too much pain (although you can get painkillers!)
Hmmm... time to get a new vet?
Get well soon little piggy x

Too bad you don't have a vet school close by. Sometimes they do better in the schools trying to show the students the best possible recourse. We have a school in Montreal I am thinking of bringing my geriatric cat there next time. The first vet ruined one of his leg joints doing an enema. Now he has a permanent limp but he is alive. Get well Piggy.

Nice to know that Evie is not letting it get her down.
