Hi all, We have a female budgie called "Winnie" who is now into her 16th year. In all the years that we have kept budgies, we have never had one this old. I tried to insert a picture into this page but it won't let me? Does anyone else have a budgie this old? Many thanks.

16 is impressive indeed! Good for Winnie... my childhood pet budgie was 12 or 13 when he died, and I've never heard of anyone having a 16 year old before!

Winnie is doing great - like others would love to see a pic of her.
Not meaning to try and outdo you or anything, but when I was a young child we had a budgie called Tony. He was blue and lived by himself in a cage in our kitchen (which was pretty noisy busy place so he had company). My understanding was that he lived until he was 17 years old. I remember the day my mum told me he'd died. I don't know how he managed to live that long because he was never out of the cage, and he only ever got Trill and the odd bit of lettuce now and then. He must have had good genes!

You must be doing something right. Good for Winnie; I hope she keeping going for a good while yet. I think some just do luck the longevity genes, a bit like humans.

Lucky you having her so long. My Misty lasted till a few weeks short of turning 15 & he was the oldest budgie we'd heard of....until now!

I Think the reason that she has done so well is that when she was 8 years old, she lost her brother (we bought them as a pair) and so we then purchased Charlie who is a rescue budgie. Yes, even budgies have to be rescued from some unthoughtful owners and he was approx 18 months old when we had him. We put Charlies cage next to Winnie's and it was love at first sight as she climbed out of her cage and onto Charlie's and both hit it off immediately and after the quarantine period, we placed them both on the window ledge and they fussed each other and then flew back to Winnies cage and it gave her a new lease of life. We call Charlie her toy boy because when he fly's around the room or comes on my shoulder, she cries out for him so I have to go to the cage and let her come on to my hand and then she scuttles up my arm and sits next to him. She is getting fragile now although that doesn't stop her eating as she still loves her Trill (eats nothing else) and I am still trying to find a way of posting an image on this forum so I will keep trying. I am on Twitter (no pun intended) so if anyone is a member, you will find me under @rockonbilly and you will see a picture of the back of my head and Winnie and Charlie on my shoulder. Winnie is the nearest one to the camera.

Many thanks for uploading the picture. There is no doubt about it, it is a love story between them. As my wife says, all women need a toy boy to keep them young. Is she trying to tell me something?
