Further info on mites:
I've researched red mite infestations on NZ poultry sites. The sites claim the mite breeds in 7 day cycles, from egg to mite. Birds need to be treated at least twice within this time period or the mites will continue to breed as the eggs are usually not harmed by the treatment. A bomb or fogger is not recommended, as this will kill the life mite but not the eggs. Unless this is done again within the 7 day cycle it is claimed to be a waste of time.
We used to have red mite in our chook pen, and these were eradicated by painting all the wood with .... (petrol / something, I'll ask OH when he's home). This treatment lasted longer than the week, and we're going to try this again. I'll keep you up to date!
