Hi everyone,
I took Pepito back to the avian vet today. In the past few months he's had a few days where he was very sleepy. It would last a few hours, then he'd be back to his usual busy, noisy self. The first couple of times he also had a retching fit but didn't really bring anything up. The first couple of times I took him to our local vet immediately and they gave him flagyl due to the retching as they thought it could be a trichonomas infection. Well, for about three or four weeks he had a "sleepy day" about once a week. No more retching, but he just slept for hours on end. On one of those occasions we had visitors so it was very noisy in the room - he's normally the life and soul of any gathering in our living room, but he slept through the whole thing! So I decided a trip back to the avian vet was in order to make sure nothing else was going on. True to form, since I made the appointment last week he hasn't had any more sleepy days but I took him anyway as I am on holiday this week so it's a bit easier to take him now, and I was keen to see how his megabacteria is at the same time, in case that was getting worse.
The vet gave him a thorough check over. He weighed him (no change) and did a crop wash. He said there was no evidence of megabacteria in his crop which doesn't mean it's not there, just that it's still likely to be a very low grade infection. However , there was some inflammation in his crop and a slight overgrowth of gram positive bacteria which is probably due to the flagyl. He didn't want to give him more antibiotics as he felt the overgrowth will settle (it's bacteria that are normally found there) but gave him metacam anti inflammatory medication to settle the inflammation in his crop.
He said he seems to be a very healthy wee budgie otherwise which was good to hear! If he has more of his sleepy days I've to keep a record of when they happen and what else is going on, such as what he's been eating, what his droppings are like etc to see if there's any pattern and take him back for more tests. I'm hoping he's over that now though!
