I wouldn't worry about taking your budgie in the car to an avian vet an hour away. All the budgies I have had have loved the car. Our avian vet is a 40 minute drive each way and Pepito sings merrily all the way! My auntie also has a budgie and regularly takes him on two hour drives to visit her family. Most ordinary vets can help birds and should be able to help this wee guy with his sore foot. You can always follow up at the avian vet but some antibiotics and pain relief might help him a good deal for now. I have heard a normal vet's course only spends about two weeks studying birds but avian specialists go on to spend much more time studying birds, their diseases and treatment. You will notice the difference if you ever consult one!

Get the sudocrem on her foot any way you can, and I agree with SQ - give her somewhere to perch without the towel if she is scared and won't perch on it. A pity though, as it would help her. But as SQ also mentioned, with this type of thing any vet will be able to help in giving you some pain relief for her, or antibiotics if they feel she needs it. Good luck with Minty. She needs you to make things as comfy for her as possible.

Thanks so much for all of your help it's been great he is much more settled this evening (albeit not on the towelling bit of the perch!). I'm going to a local avairy tomorrow to get some rope perches and anything that will be suitable for him, I know some have said about getting a perch that is flat for him to eat from but I can't seem to find anything suitable online - does anyone have any idea what I could use? Swapped his sand sheets straight away for the newspaper - feel bad I didn't know this was bad/and the perches. Will the vet be able to clip his nails? He's a very nervous bird so I don't know how he will cope with the journey to the vets and being handled, he is very wobbly on his feet and getting around so I am concerned but I know he needs some abx/pain relief. I also removed his plastic ladder which he adored and is clearly missing but it was quite thin plastic I figured it probably wasn't going to help matters even though it was what he has slept on for the past ten years.. thank you again and I'll keep you updated Will put some sudocreme on him before I head to bed.

You did the right thing removing the plastic ladder. When you looking for cotton rope perches have a look for wooden ladders as well. Minty may not be taken with one initially, but persevere for the sake of the foot. She may come around in time. And yes, a vet will be able to clip her nails if needed.

I bought thicker tree branch perches in pets at home as well as a rope perch and wood ladder, all very reasonably priced. The swing I got which is wood and flat round perch from natural bird company
Bailey has been to the vet a few times. I have him in the front with a cover over three sides, only the end of his cage nearest me, uncovered. He loves it, top perch, chatting. I also take the water out as it goes everywhere. Good luck with the vet

Thanks so much I am about to make an order with naturalbirdco.co.uk (thank you for showing me their great website). Four different perches. Now I just need to figure out what I'm going to do ladder wise, I was thinking of getting one of these ones and then somehow taking off the mirror bit from his one and attaching it to this one... not sure how successful it'll be! As he loves his mirror on the ladder and also the beads on it but don't think I'll be able to transfer the beads. He uses his ladder to perch on the most as he isn't very mobile with both his feet being bad and his balance as well, the ladder supports him well. His is like this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/161079983527?limghlpsr=true&hlpv=2&ops=true&viphx=1&hlpht=true&lpid=108&device=c&adtype=pla&crdt=0&ff3=1&ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=108&ff19=0 can't find any similar in wood form. Will let you know how the vets goes tomorrow but his foot is healing very well with the savlon, still going to take him though.

Karen is great! I designed my swung, she will make things from what you want. Also worth getting stainless steel connector things. I changed most if my fittings to SS.

I want to get more perches and things from there, but it will have to wait until I can get a bigger cage, whenever that will be. Sadly, I was so busy when I last ordered perches from there that I forgot to reply to the email I was sent, so I probably seemed really rude.

my girl has problems with a sore on her foot (from bareing more weight on that foot than the other so not something I can treat) anyway getting it to heal I had to swap half the perches for rope ones then the natural wodden ones I had to wrap in human bandages. I have to keep her claws clipped short so they don't catch on them. Also making sure she isn't over weight is a massive help with mine (although she insits she is just big boned)
