Pepito is a sleepy boy again today.. I'm disappointed as he hasn't had a day like this for about 3 or 4 weeks. But he was less active this morning then slept through lunch time. We had to go out this afternoon so not sure how much he slept then. He came right out to play when we got back but then fell asleep on the table. He woke up but was very lethargic and I had trouble getting him to go back to his cage before we had our dinner. When he did he went back to sleep. He also had another episode where it looks like he's trying to be sick but nothing comes up. He doesn't seem too distressed while it's happening but then I don't know if a budgie would get upset about being sick! He's been off the Metcam for two days after having it for a week as prescribed by the vet.
My mum thinks he's probably just tired himself out as he's been very active the past few days and done a lot of flying around, more than he has recently. I'm not so sure as I think budgies are just busy little birds and like to fly around a lot at times. But I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on whether budgies can tire themselves out too much? The other thing mum suggested is whether he could have eaten something off the floor that he's trying to get rid of when he looks like he's trying to be sick. We do hoover the floor at least once a day and try to stop him eating little bits and pieces, but we're not always in the room while he's playing on the floor. One vet we saw said it could be something he's picked up off the floor as birds tend to have a nibble at anything they find! Don't get me wrong, we do try to keep the floor free of bits and pieces and we do discourage him from picking bits up..
The vet said if this kept happening to start keeping a record of what his droppings are like on these days, what he eats and how long the episodes last and take him back in a few weeks (sooner if it deteriorates of course) and they'll do blood tests to check for other infections. I didn't want that for him but it might have to be. Normally when he's having little naps through the day he chatters away in his sleep but on these days when he's sleepy he doesn't talk in his sleep so he must be quite sound. He's just woken up and had some seed and is now preening. There doesn't seem to be a problem with his appetite which is one thing at least!
