when I first brought Adam my male budgie 3 month ago home, he had some orange feather on his head. Now and after molting these feathers are gone. don't feather work like hair follicles? for example blond hair people will stay blond? his head before: and now:

My youngest one changed colouring slightly throughout the first 5 months... He went darker on the head. Maybe it's like when a blonde baby grows and changes to a brown haired child? I suppose they're still developing? Adam looks like a female in these photos?... But then I'm not the best judge of this (as my last posts on here have proven) - How old are your pair? They're very sweet by the way!

There is no orange in budgies. I suspect the colour you saw was staining from some sort of toy or mineral block.

I did think "wow, that's the first budgie with orange I've ever seen!"... Good fact of the day, SQ

It is definitely staining of some sort. Even in the photo you can see that it is not a uniform colour. Budgies just do not do orange!

If it is a stain it would be gone with bathing or pruning. The color stayed there until he changed feathers. A more clear pic:

No it really doesn't come out with Preening or bathing. Here is my hen who had staining from a mineral black. She is an older rescue bird who took a liking to the mineral block because she had probably not seen one before. And just before she moulted. And now

The dye could have come from a toy. Why do you not have mineral blocks? You should have them and cuttle bone to have a healthy bird. You can buy then in any pet store very cheaply.

so in nature budgies go and buy these things? I belive if u give them diffrent varieties of fruits and veggies, they won't need them. I hate to take supplemets myself and I won't give them to my budgies ^-^

Do you keep your birds inside? Will they have time outside in the sun?

They can either have Vitamin D3 as a supplement on their food, direct from the sun or via a D3 bulb. When they are outside, make sure they have some shade or they will over heat, but I'm sure you know that already. I seriously think you should reconsider your decision to withhold the mineral block as they need these minerals to be healthy and live a long life. Also a cuttle bone as it is natural calcium and is needed to grow new feathers and keep bones and beak strong.
