I had a check up for Paddy tonight. Good news is that his white and red blood cells are back to normal healthy levels and he has put on 4 grams of weight. He had lost 3 grams last time he was weighed. He is now 42g. He has showed signs of improvement but there are still some abnormalities showing in his blood and now I've went and forgotten what the vet called them. Micro something's. He is gripping ok when perching, but when on a flat surface his foot is showing signs of disability. His poops look better too, but still a bit on the green side and apparently when on medicines it will stay greenish or pale until they stop. I never knew this before.
In a nutshell the vet does not know what is wrong with him, so the plan is to continue with his meds for 2 weeks then back again for another blood test and check up. And Apple will go too, as I am still a wee bit concerned about him after he was unwell that last time.
But right now Paddy is bright and chirpy and up wayyyy past his bedtime. They are all getting too noisy and boisterous so it's cover up time now!

Mycoplasma? Or micrococcus? Micrococcus is normal flora, but can get out of balance; mycoplasma is an invading organism, and can cause respiratory infection-type symptoms.
Or it could have been mycobacteria ...... the organism that caused TB. Budgies and cockatiels can get this one.

I do hope you can figure it out. It's no fun having sick buds.
Wasn't it something like mycoplasma that caused Starrymist's Brodie to get his nares clogged with a sinus infection?

Let's hope they do find out and fix the problem. It's bad enough when us humans have something that can't be diagnosed, but at least we can tell someone when things are not right, poor budgies can't.

It wasn't any of those micros! I really can't remember, it will come back to me, but he said that they normally point to an infection being there but he is a bit puzzled with Paddy. He is certain there is some kind of swelling in his kidney region, but wether caused by infection or start of a tumour he does not know. He said if it were a tumour then there would not really be any signs of improvement in his blood cells or foot grip like there has been, but he cannot rule it out completely.
He mentioned if he was a larger bird then they could put a tube / camera down him, or X-ray, but he said Paddy was too small and although it could be done, the chances were too high that he wouldn't survive.
OP it's so frustrating that we cannot find out! I wish they could tell us what's wrong.

While I was waiting in the reception, there were two other birds there, a cockatiel and an African grey who had both badly plucked themselves till they had bled. It's heartbreaking seeing these birds like this

So glad to hear Paddy is better but it is so hard when it is not clear what is going on and you have to keep watchful. You've done great with him though, and you should be proud and enjoy that he is doing better x

Paddy update - he got another blood test and white and red blood cells are now completely normal. His little foot is showing good improvement and has power and grip back. There are still monosites present in his blood but the vet was happy with him and his condition. So the Metacam is stopped and he has to continue with Baytril till next week them see how he is on his own after that. He has put on weight and is now 45g. Wings crossed he is going to be okay, but they could not rule out that there is still something there, lurking. In himself he is great, very active and happy We also took Apple, and he got his blood done, as some may remember he had a liver infection a few months ago and was unwell. His blood cells were off the scale in a bad way. Good new is that they are now completely normal. But the little mite is a 'junk food' addict and apparently enjoying too much of the fatty seeds as his blood showed cholesterol. I've now noticed him picking out certain seeds and ignoring the others need to try and tempt him with more variety. His weight though is fine. He is 48g. Sprite also came along for the journey as the day before she had been fussing a bit around her rear end and her droppings were watery, so I thought she might aswell come seeing as I was going anyway. She is fine, but a total heavyweight! She weighs a whopping 65g!!! The vet said she was a big girl but also quite show bird and as a sibling to Custard who is also huge, it may just be in their genes. I'm sorry but NO millet for Sprite for foreseeable future. She is on a diet. 65g! I was mortified!

Well done, everyone! Well, maybe not Sprite ........ So happy for you, lemonade. What a load off your shoulders. Now just to work on her Sprity-ness. She doesn't have all the boys feeding her like Smudge has, does she???
