Thanks Sam Budgie breeders always thought that it is not possible to have both yellow and white color in a single budgie, until it was proven otherwise in 1930 and Yellowface Blue mutation appeared. Soon breeders realized that different shades of Yellowface were appearing in blue budgies. So they were divided into three types. In earlier literature, they were called… Yellowface Type 1 Yellowface Type 2 Goldenface But the correct terms are… Yellowface Mutant 1 Yellowface Mutant 2 Goldenface The Budgerigar Society has also given these 3 different types the names of Yellowface Mutant 1, Yellowface Mutant 2 and Goldenface. Each has its own color standard, as in the 1994 BS Color standards book. Wow! Simply B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L BudgiesBuddy! Can I ask a silly question? Which one do you think Boo is, BB? It's a good shot in my avatar. To be sure, I will have to compare a few pictures in different lights. But as the spread of yellow is a lot, Boo is either Yellowface Mutant 2 or Goldenface. I'd also thought he was a Yellow II mutation. His colours are very vivid. The yellow is very yellow and the blue, very blue. The yellow has gradually begun to seep into the blue in later moults to create a sort of sea foam greenish blue. He still has pure blue trousers, and pure blue under the whole length of his wings. I had read somewhere that this Yellow II mutation was only found in Australia. Not sure if that is correct. What is the difference between a Goldenface and a Yellow II?

I know I am just clutching at straws here but is it the depth/brightness of yellow BudgiesBuddy? I thought Boo would be a goldenface? But he still exceptionally beautiful stace

The articles and discussions about Yellowface budgies are probably more than any other budgie mutation. I remember being part of a few which were quite heated. Opinions differ significantly. And it is very difficult to be sure about Yellowface genetics just by looking at the pictures, even if the pictures resemble the true color in person. Of course, sometimes pictures can be deceiving at well I know I am just clutching at straws here but is it the depth/brightness of yellow BudgiesBuddy? I thought Boo would be a goldenface? Here is one of my birds, showing different colors in different pictures. In one picture it looks like a Goldenface. In another picture it looks like Yellow Face Mutant 1 (SF) and in another picture it looks like Yellow Face Mutant 2 (DF). Whereas it is Yellow Face Mutant 1 Opaline Cobalt.

I had read somewhere that this Yellow II mutation was only found in Australia. Not sure if that is correct. What is the difference between a Goldenface and a Yellow II? There is no short answer to this. Describing them visually, both Yellowface Mutant 2 and Goldenface have the spread of yellow in the body. The Yellowface Mutant 2 is lighter and looks like buttercup yellow. But the Goldenface is a bit deeper in yellow and should look like golden yellow, especially on the face (left bottom picture in the image of Yellowfaces above). The confusion about Yellowface is more in Australia where Goldenfaces have been referred to as Yellowface Mutant 2. Sometimes both are combined under the banner of Australian Yellowface. RipBudgies have been working on breeding Goldenfaces recently but has disappeared from forums since a year or so.

Wow you do know your stuff BudgiesBuddy, thank you so much for taking the time to type all that out! It does prove very interesting tho doesn't it? And I suppose you are going to get people having differences of opinion now and then when it comes to visual colours/mutations
