Hi I have just bought a young budgie and she is in quite a small cage at the mo although I am looking for a better one. I want a long/wide one but all the ones I keep seeing are tall and tower like. Can anyone suggest a nice cage, maybe 2 foot long but only up to 18 inches high?

Ok, well you lot have talked me into it. I just thought they looked a bit prison like on the pics. I like the idea of no mess though. I will order the med one tomorrow.

Have a look on line for a breeding cage. They are 40cm deep, 40cm high and 60cm long. But they are a bit flimsy. Ideal if your cage is going to stay in the one place, maybe not so good if you want to move it around. Pros - cheap and light, easy to clean. Cons - a little flimsy I don't know where you would find one where-ever you are. They usually have one big main door (where the nestbox attaches), a smaller door inside the large door and two feeder doors. But everyone who has these Hagen cages likes them, so there must be something going for them.

Yes, I def do want to move it around especially when she first comes out to fly. I may need to take her to a safer room. And I work in a shed in my garden so she will prob come out there with me sometimes if its safe. I will get a Hagen. (and the name makes me think of my favourite ice cream!)

Hi good luck with your new budgie, I also deliberated for ages over what cage to get and in the end chose the Hagen Medium and am really happy with it but I have found that once the perches are in and a few toys there isn't that much room for any more so I am now thinking possibly about getting the large. I can't remember whether it is better to have more width or height I think it is width.

it is better to have width so they can fly - although the one I have isnt that wide. I think too it depends on if the budgie will be out of the cage much. Bailey is out most days for quite a while and some days, just the evening, so his need to fly indoors as it were, is not that great.
I bought him a Savic cage - think called Tallinn... I like it and it has a slide out tray and the base is fine, depth wise.. so not too much mess
