Hello all, Hope someone can help me here. I'm going to make an appointment with the vet right now, but if anyone has seen this sort of thing before it would be helpful to hear your experiences on it. I got a new hen last week, with the idea of eventually breeding her with one of my males. She's in a separate room to the others just now, of course, and I've just been bonding with her (reading her books etc)for the past week. Last night when I put the cover over her cage she looked great - I even remarked that she looked better than when I'd got her from the pet store. She's been given only the best since she came home with me. However, this morning I got such a fright when I looked into the cage and saw one of her eyes has (overnight!) become swollen, red and the fathers around that eye have come away. She doesn't seem to be scratching it at all, but the eye is smaller than her other and it certainly looks uncomfortable if not painful. I'm really worried about her This eye is fine, but her left one:

Poor little thing. I know some people used golden eye ointment on swollen eyes. I gues you really want to know what might have caused it. The vet will have a solution. Hugs to you both.

Thank you both. I've got an appointment for 6.30pm today which is good. I've done some internet research and it looks like it might be conjunctivitis, possibly...
Well, I'll let you know what the verdict is at the vets this evening. I'm so glad I had today off work, so I can keep her company and see if she's eating ok.

Gosh that looks uncomfortable. : ( Did the vet say anything about what it was? I hope she gets better soon!
As an aside, this is a really great message for people who put new birds together without quarantine, cause if she was with others it could easily spread!

Well, we went to the vets and the chap reckons it is conjunctivitis. It may have been something she was carrying since the pet store, or it could have been stress (from moving to a new home/cage) which made it flare up - I'm quite prone to an eye sti when I get stressed at work! So I could understand how that might happen. I've got antibiotics to put in her water for the next 5 days and I'll be keeping a close eye on her to see she if she's recovering
@blu... I agree! So glad I've went by the books and went through quarantine period. It goes to show how important it is. It really is a must!

If you wish to help sooth the eye, you can use cold weak black tea either as a compress or to bathe the eye. Chamomile tea is also very good, made the same way.
I am actually surprised the vet gave you AB's to be ingested. Goldern eye ointment includes a topical antibiotics, and I would have thought was a much better option. Good luck with getting her eye back to normal. She is a pretty little thing; have you named her yet?

Thanks everyone! Nothing ro report today she's looking much the same. She's eating well though and seems pirky enough. Hezz - thanks for the hot tips! That's good to know. I'll give that a try with some cold camomile tea tomorrow. Should I just use one of those little cotton buds to dab a little on/around her eye? Yes, she is such a pretty little lady, isn't she? Especially without her dinosaur-esk eye poor little darling. Her name is Sally. She's a brave little gem.

I looked on the web but only found US places selling it. Anywhere you'd reccommend trying? Thanks again! Ps. Not that I can use that along with anibiotics (i dont think?) but if they don't work it will be good to try golden eye ointment. Plus useful to have in the budgie's cupboard for future

You can buy it over the counter in the chemist, just don't tell them it's for a budgie.

Plus useful to have in the budgie's cupboard for future As SQ has mentioned, at the pharmacy. Yes, it is a handy thing to have in your first aid box, whether that be for budgies or humans. Don't use it while Sally is on other AB's - that's a real no-no. To use the cold tea, I would recommend using the tea bag ...... cotton wool buds or balls can leave strands behind, and you don't want that. Let he teabag be dripping wet almost, and use it to hold lightly over the affected area. Or some paper towel dipped into the tea would work as well. Just not the cotton balls or buds.

Hello, Sally. Hope your eye is better soon. You are much too beautiful to have a sore eye.
