Hey, my name's Annabelle, I'm 14 and I'm really nervous about my budgie Tolliver. I am posting here because I'm unsure as to whether a vet is necessary or if I am simply overreacting. He is under a year old and does not do a lot of exercise (I let him out but he doesn't fly, this is an issue I believe could be related: tired). I have two pictures: one was taken a few moments ago and the other was taken a few minutes ago. Is my budgie just tired and sleeping, or is he sick? Thank you so much, Annabelle.

Upload to photobucket or the like and then copy/paste the IMG code. How long have you had Tolliver? Has he always been rather lazy? Is he a big fluffy boofy-feathered show budgie? Or a small, stream-lined normal budgie? Has his behaviour changed at all to make you think he may be sick? Have his poops changed is another thing to look at. Has he been moulting lately? What is his diet like? Does he eat only seed, or fruit and veggies, grass .....?? If you can answer some, preferably all, of these questions we may be able to give you some tips, but also try to get the photos up and showing. They would be the most help.

Thank you for your information on the uploading, I will do so in a second but first I will try my hardest to answer the questions. I have had him since he was three months old (so almost a year now) and he's always been pretty lazy but not as much as this. Before he used to fly a little to opposite walls but now he doesn't leave the cage. He is regularly of normal body size for a budgie though I believe he's put on a little weight recently, although he's not too big by what I've seen of other budgies. Behaviour wise, I haven't really noticed anything different. Tolly's always been a little anti-social with people (he gets on fine with his cage-partner) so I really have no cause for concern in this respect - he's still chirpy and bubbly. In regards to poop, it's a little hard to tell if they are his or Rupert's (the cage-partner I mentioned earlier). They look relatively healthy but I am no expert in poop unfortunately. Moulting no more than he has in the past. His diet consists mainly of a seed I buy which is supposed to be quite varied in the types included. I put a little bit of grit in the bowl because apparently it's healthy for muscles in the mouth. They both have millet perhaps once every two weeks if that has a bearing on his diet and water is fresh every day. I sometimes place different things as an alternative source in the cage such as chopped apple or a different flavoured treat, but not recently. I hope that maybe helps a little, that's the best I could do. I have no idea if this makes a change to your opinion, but I moved about two weeks ago so there has been a change in scenery for him, although I noticed this tiredness etc before we actually left.

Here are the images (?). I'm going to feel like an idiot if he's fine for wasting all of your time, but a relieved idiot, no doubt. I wouldn't want him to be unwell: that'd be awful. Also, I fear the images will not work so I have put the links here: imageshack.com/i/nfkpmdfjimageshack.com/i/ng3ql2jI don't know if it's of any importance but I have just noticed his feet are a purply blue colour. Relevent? If so, I apologise for not mentioning it earlier. Thank you for your help and patience.

I don't know how image shack works, I use photo bucket, the easy one. It's hard to tell if he's sick r not really. If all he does is sit and sleep he possibly is. How long have you had him? Does his tail bob up and down when sleeping?

The first photo I assume is a resting photo? The second he looks fine, but I am concerned that you may have sand sheets over your perches?? If these are what I am seeing, please remove them ASAP. They are very bad for budgies' feet and can cause them to get a condition called bumblefoot - hard to heal sores on the bottom of their feet. His feet are the normal colour for a bird of his mutation.
His diet could certainly do with some tweaking. More fresh food and less seed may help him lose weight and get some energy back. That means more fruit and veggies, fresh seeding grasses and sprouts. It may be worth worming him as well. He may need to be "encouraged" to fly also.
From what you have said, and your description of Tolly, my thinking is that you have a basically lazy budgie who, because he doesn't interact with people too much, has become a cage dweller. While he may not actually be fat, he may well be suffering from fatty liver disease .... his diet and exercise routine certainly leave room for improvement.

I think you could introduce some fresh foods to his diet . like spinach , basil , carrot , sweetcorn, butternut squash , rocket , watercress , celery ,and some fruits like apple, grape, etc they love to nibble on fresh foods its good for them and gives them a much needed varied diet.

Okay, fresh foods: got it. Also, those aren't sand covers, they are like grooved rubber which is part of the perch. Thank you.
