I have an 8 year old Budgie and recently she has been falling from her perch as she tries to sleep only to land on the bottom of the cage. I have noticed that one of her feet has a toe that now sticks straight out when she tries to grab onto the cage as if that wasn't bad enough she is now having issues with her other foot. When I try to take her out she clenches both feet and tries to walk that way and is having a tough time staying on the perches Is there anything I can do to help her??

I can't help but the experienced ones will be on probably soon, it's a bit quiet tonight. So sorry for your little friend. I didn't want you to think nobody is bothered.

Hi and welcome. Have you been to a vet at all?
Some on here have put padding on the bottom of the cage to cushion any falls, and you will get lots of advice. Poor little girl, I hope you can get something thst helps

I was able to finally contact a vet that will see birds in my area and I am waiting for them to call me back. I am not sure what I would pad the cage with because I would be afraid she would chew on it ... when I got home this evening she was calling me to her cage and wanted to come out but was afraid to move from the perch. I just feel helpless

:-( oh how hard for both of you. I hope the vet calls. I think a few on here could help with padding. Do you photos

How do I upload other photos? She lives in a parrots cage however i have brought all the perches low so she isn't falling as far.

That was a good idea to move the perches down low. A towel without much pile or layers of paper towels on the bottom of the cage would cushion her fall. You could also wrap the perches in surgical tape to make gripping easier (more padding). Let us know what the vet has to say. Poor little girl.

Has anyone ever used heated perches? Any other suggestions for padding the bottom of the cage?

I use bubblewrap covered with newspaper to cushion the floor of one of my cages as my budgie is prone to falling. This both raises it up so there isn't so far to fall, and it is a much softer landing.

Will the newspaper ink hurt her she loves to chew at things?

No, newspaper is okay - ink is nontoxic now.
Re heated perches - never heard of these - sorry.

Thank you - I will try that this evening.. I put the heat lamp on her this morning and she went right to it. I saw that they have heated perches and I thought maybe that would help her too. I will try anything. She is still talking up a storm and seems fine other than her balance.

Sorry not to be on earlier (been away) but I presently have a budgie with his leg in plaster, and am using an old bed sheet folded over and over to give him the padding and a softer surface. But he is restricted to a smaller cage because of his injury, so this is a little easier to do. I also have not heard of heated perches, but if your little one is moving into the heat of a lamp, I suggest you keep it on. It must be giving her some relief.

So far I have taken the bottom of the cage out and replaced it with a sheet as well, which is funny cause she fell onto it and decided to lay down and take a nap.. she is a comical bird at best! I have a heat lamp on her which seems to be helping her. She still clenches both feet when she comes out, but I have made an appointment with the vet to take a look at her and cut her nails which I am not sure if those can bother her but they are rather long since I was at a loss as to what to do for her when she got hurt. I will keep you posted we go tomorrow.

Well it certainly wasn't good news at the vet She has nerve damage in both her feet and there is nothing they can really do about it.. They prescribed an anti-inflammatory to see if that helps her. So for the next 10 days I will be giving her her meds and then take her back for another visit to see if there is any change and talk about long time care if it does help. If it doesn't help I just have to take her home and hope it doesn't get worse... Feeling helpless...
