Sounds like Smudge needs to give him a talking to.

Oh dear BB, I suppose bigger beaks mean bigger damage! On a positive note, Fit Club is already working: Brodie's less out of puff & rather than gain a gram this week, he's lost one!

I think I need launching. I can't stop eating
I had to tip Bailey off tonight as he bit me, and he just stares if I tell him off. So for him, launching is the new shouting.

Erm, budgie Fit Club was working well, Brodie was losing a gram a week & all was well. He was down to 50g.
However we moved back up the flat again (with lots of parental care visits, at least twice a day) 3 wks ago. That meant him moving back into the Hagen cage & initially he was struggling to find his seed pot again, silly boy so I didn't make him do so much exercise just in case.
However he's managing it fine now but in the past 2weeks he's put on 11g, today he's 61g!!! He used to get a small piece of millet a day, now it has to last 2days so it's mostly not in his cage but he is eating A LOT of seed (clearly!). It's the new trill mixed in with some old. Could it be rationing the millet is just making him pig out on seed or the new mix or what? I'm confused!

it sounds like it could be. maybe it doesnt work for them, that their stomach shrinks if they eat less for a while.. mind you doesnt for me either, lol.
when he has his millet now, is it out of the cage, i wonder if he could be made to fly a bit to get it or something.

He gets his millet in his cage but only for a short time. I make him fly every day & he's so active generally, always busy, busy, busy. Although his nights are longer in the flat as I go to bed early but his weight wasn't affected during his last stay here. So confusing!

As well as increase his flying, the only other thing I can think of for you to do is ration the amount of seed he gets, say two tablespoons a day, but make sure he has fresh food always available for once he has pigged his seed ration. I realise this means more work for you. Have you tried sprouting seeds for him? The seeds use their fat stores to germinate, so by the time they are sprouts they contain very little in the way of fat.

When you. Say sprouting seeds do you mean the bean sprout type things? But assuming you mean from bird seed?

Yes starrymist, just ordinary budgie seed, I sprout it for Ben & Max, they love them, I also sprout Alfalfa sprouts for them, there are various ways to sprout seeds, if you Google you will see some of them, I do mine in a sprouting jar (A.Vogel Bio Snacky Small Germinator Jar) bought from amazon for about £7.00. Put a couple of tablespoons in the jar and leave to soak overnight, next morning rinse and drain, then rinse a few times throughout the day, and after 2/3 days the sprouts are ready to be fed to the birds, they also keep fresh if stored in the fridge for a few days, but I always rinse mine each time before serving.

I'm mean and stingy. I only give Boo 2-3 teaspoons of mixed seed each day. Though he does get veggies, seeding grass and other bits and pieces on top of that daily.

That's not stingy, that's enough Stace.
Mine eat LOADS!
But they are so active. I monitor their weights weekly.

Thanks guys. We're upping the seeded grasses & letting him have a tiny bit of millet each day (it stays in the cage now, I wondered if removing it was causing him to pig out), so we'll see if that plan works. I'm a little wary of sprouted stuff since I watched a programme about them harbouring bacteria...
