For the past 4/5 days now I've seen Ben continually picking at his feet, both him and Max are going through a moult at the minute, with soft downy feathers, Max will clean his feet as all budgies do then leave them alone, but Ben always seems to be cleaning and picking his. They are both lively, poops are normal, and they are both eating well, and are lively enough, although at the moment because of the moult are sleeping and resting slightly more in the afternoon. I have included some pictures of Ben's feet and one of his beak as this morning I thought his feet looked slightly swollen. I have put some petroleum jelly on both feet just a few minutes ago after taking the pictures, to hopefully reduce the itch which seens to be bothering him. Thanks for any help

I cant tell much from the pics I'm afraid but is he holding it up at all? Sometimes buds get a tiny fracture and that may have caused a bit of swelling but he may not want to rest on it that much if that is the case.
What about the soles of his feet? Are they red or swollen at all?

The soles of his feet look perfectly normal.

Bear with me here, jellybean, being on the tablet, but it looks to me like he has scaly mites on his feet and legs. Same treatment applies as for beak and cere - 0.1% I ivermectin spot on ..... one drop on the base of the neck once a week for three weeks. Do both birds each time. Part the feathers and drop the drop onto their skin. Good thing you are on the ball and saw what was happening. Usually the first dose will reduce the itcbing but the follow up doses kill off the eggs that may be hidden below the skin. Good luck and God bless.

How could he have got mites Hezz? When I had him at the vet with the sore eye and to have a general health check I asked about mites and the vet reassured me he was clear. I am meticulous in their cleanliness, the cage is cleaned every morning with F10, as well as perches. I will order that stuff this morning. Thanks for your help.

Could be that your vet missed it, or it has only just shown up. It's not a cleanliness thing, so don't feel you've done something wrong. The mite can pass from bird to bird.

It works quickly, normally there are three drops, one per week.. I gave them to Bailey at the beginning when it was poss he had mites. although not sure how much I got on his skin, as he is not the easiest to get hold of

yes.. he never lets me hold him... i used to wait til he had his back to me, and grab him.. worst case scenario, am sure your vet would do it cheaply.. its just the once a week so not too bad

When you pick them up put your first and second fingers either side of the head the rest round the body. Then blow the feathers on the back of the neck so they part and pop on your drops.
