No not mine the budgies. What is considered to be old for a budgie? I can see changes in Mischief although she's not sick, she's slowing down, sleeping more and there are just things I notice that make me wonder if she's perhaps a little older than I have been led to believe all these years. I thought she was about one when we got her but not sure now she's possibly 9.

I feel anything into double figures is doing pretty well, for a budgie.

There is some controversy as to what a budgie can live to but it also does depend on whether the are domestic bred or show bred too. Budgies breeders in Britain have bred a larger type of budgie and unfortunately what goes with breeding out imperfections you can also sometimes have some come in. A bit like double muscled cattle sometimes cant give birth to their calves because they are just too bulky. Same for budgies in we have bred a larger bird but perhaps doesn't live as long because of they perhaps obtain more conditions as a result. Personally I feel if a budgie gets to the age of 5 and over then that is pretty good. Our Wiggy is just about 5 and he has a nap in the afternoon. He still flies around and still has a nap here and there but he does ok If she is 9 then I would say that is pretty good

Bailey has a nap most days.. but I think that is just because he is with me, and not other buds

I was thinking of asking the same question because my Jayjay, who is about six I think, seems to sleep more now. He's still completely crazy though, bopping along to music and chasing his boyfriend Alfie, i think he's just at that age where he prefers the lazy life haha!

Ah thank you, most helpful (as always) in our budgie world.....bless you all They attach themselves to our heart strings so quickly and easily.....I've been watching them more of late because I'm still recovering from my hip op and I'm probably over-reacting. Feel better for having asked though

see my follow-up post to "tricky is sick" where I addressed the same question. Sounds like Mischief is aging, but could still have several good years left. k

I tend to agree with Sam that a budgie over 5 is going well. I've lost a couple around the 5 year mark, not necessarily because of old age but rather sickness. From what I've experienced, from 5 and up budgies are more prone to sickness and seem to lose some of their energy by this age. It seems as though age 5 is the number that separate the young guns from the older birds. One pair I had, Dave and Tess, both lived to quite a grand age: Tess 8 years from memory and Dave around 10 years. They both passed away from old age, where they simply seemed to have a turn for the worst, lose their balance, sense of direction and basically couldn't move as they fell over straight away. But they are very un active leading up to it.
If your bud is 9 years now and just slowing down I'd say he/she is going her for their age!

This is so helpful, after Kiki who I had for 9 1/2 years, I a very bad patch losing three in just two years. I'm thinking it may have been age with Alfie, because I didn't know what I know now, about 'baby markings' or how to tell a budgies age! I think Mischief's 1st 'partner' Alfie must have been a lot older than I thought as we didn't have him long at all. Some of the people I bought from must have thought I was clueless about budgies....but I've learned so much especially with joining this forum. Thanks
