Had to take little girl to the vet last Friday as she was acting like she was eggbound. She was sat on the floor poofed up, her bum looked swollen, she was panting and her wings dropped and just not herself. So took her in and yep the vet could feel an egg. So he gave her a bit of anaestheti, got the egg out and have her an injection to temporarily shut her ovaries off (they same stuff they give to female dogs).
All was well and she was much better, untill now. Last night she seemed a bit quiet and did look like she was sitting a bit funny and was breathing faster but she was up on her perch. So got up early to check on her and she was back on the floor acting like she was on Friday, she hasn't played any eggs since friday.
She has appointment with the vet tomorrow morning as he isn't here today so she is in her travel cage on a hot water bottle with some guardian angel in her water.
What I'm wandering is once a hen has been eggbound will they be prone to it happening again and again?

Poor little Ada. I hope this won't keep happening to her. The vet will help her.

Poor girl , this is my worse nightmare with my old girl Freddy, one of my boys wont leave her alone again at the moment so ive separated them, but then we all know you don't have to have a male for them to be in this position. Im not 100% sure about your question but keeping her warm and getting her to a vet, any vet, asap is vital if you suspect another one is stuck. I do hope she is ok bless her.

I am guessing this is your new(ish) girl, because isn't Ada a boy?? Poor girl, I cannot help; I have not been in this position, and hope never to be, to be honest. Just had a quick look on-line and unfortunately it seems that you may be right, in that once they have had this problem they do seem more prone to it in future. Good luck with all this, PP. Hope the vet is able to help and hopefully help stop it happening again.

Thanks guys, hopefully this won't keep happening. Yes Hezz it's the new girl, ada is a boy lol (but shhh don't tell him I mean her that, she is a pretty girl)
We are off to the vets in 15 mins. Still no new egg and she is still acting the same, allthough she did bite me last night which is more like her normal self. I'm hoping that the injection will have kicked in and that if she does have an egg it will be because she started making it befor the injection started working not that it isn't working. But she is having wetter poo which the vet said would happen with the stuff he gave her so hopefully it's working. If it works I guess I could have her injected at regular times of the year to keep it topped up. I may ask about the possibility of having her spayed if the injection doesn't work, one page about egg binding said about spaying to prevent it.
I've put her old eggs back in the cage, vet said to either boil them and put them back or get fake ones so not to encourage her to lay a second set. I was hoping what with the blind guy being blind they wouldn't breed thinking he wouldn't be able to see to mount her but nope I was wrong.

Back from the vets. There was an add in her but this time it wasn't fully calcified like all the others were, it's very top was soft. So that's out, she isn't impressed and is tired so I've left her in her travel cage with the hot water bottle. The vet agreed that she was prob forming the egg when she had the injection as he said it depends on where in her cycle she was at the time of injection. So hopefully no more egg making for her but we will see. He has said I can keep her on the injection and with the birds he had given it to its lasted 4-6 months. There is an implant but he thinks it will be too big for her so we will try the injections for now and see how it goes.

Good news for the wee girlie and great you have been so on the ball regarding her health. I hope this is the end of the egg-era for good, but if not, then at least you do have an alternative, and that is a good thing. You know, they may not have been mating - she could be simply a hen who can't help herself but lay.

Thanks hezz. my sister in law caught them in the act apparently lol I've not seen them at it though but I don't spend much time in that room. She was so happy with I put her back in the big cage he can running over to her and they were kissing. She has been spending most of her time with her fav toy every time I checked on her in the day and was doing the splits on the bars at the top of the cage not long ago which she hasn't done in the last few days.

Well so far no sign of anymore eggs. Just habe to see how long it will work for or I can just habe her done again in January. She has been spending mkst of her time with her fab toy judging from the mountain of poop that keeps appearing under it.

Get another one of those toys now, quick! And set it aside for when the time comes that it is needed. It is always the favourite toy that gets broken and is not able to be found again.

Hezz speaks the truth! We always lose the favourite ball to the foot or rustybell syndrome!
Glad to hear she is feeling better!
