My older female budgie Ben (had her since 2007 as she was a rescue) use to come out from the cage on her own when I cleaned it for a fly around and she was always a very strong flyer. This morning she came out as usual and kept crash landing, only managing to get up around four feet before crash landing again....I had to catch her and put her back in the cage to prevent her harming herself. She's in good health, eating and playing with the others. I just wondered why this has happened now....I noticed a few larger feathers in the cage over the last few weeks and wondered if her flight feathers have moulted and this is what's making her flying difficult. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks x

I would think that is the answer H2O, but when my birds lose a few too many flight feathers they don't bother trying to fly. Hopefully Ben will realise not to attempt to fly for the time being. Perhaps other members have more ideas tho.

Yes, H20, I have recently had the same problem with one of my hens. I think she had only two or three flight feathers on each wing when this happened. I had to do the same thing, shut her in for a week or so until the new feathers started to grow back. It doesn't take long, and the feathers don't have to be completely grown out to give her back her flying power. My girl, while only a little thing, is a tubby thing so this added to her flop. I took her into my bedroom each day for a little physical therapy - to try out her wings without worrying about her crash landing as she could land on the bed.

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. She has been left to rest and I took her out to examine her but couldn't find any lumps, anything unusual or injuries which was good....she has had a little fly yesterday and is definitely a lot better at flying than she was...luckily she isn't a tubby budgie so hopefully she will be back to her usual happy flying self soon. I have to say she got really upset with herself when she couldn't do what she usually does and have a little fly around...it was almost as if she was swearing to herself in budgie language when she was marching around on the floor Thanks x

Thanks everyone x That's good news. They would be something's dinner if they moulted out like this in the wild.
