Hey,
Puck has been having problems of late, so my Mum took him to the vet who said it looked like avian diabetes. He's been drinking lots of water and loads of water poo. He has apparently stopped singing but other wise his behaviour is unchanged. The vet checked his heart and eyes and they appeared fine.
The vets advice was to carry on as normal and it might pass.
Has anyone else heard of this and have any suggestions?
Thanks, Matt

No suggestions to offer, Matt, but yes birds can get diabetes like the rest of the animal world, unfortunately. I would be keeping him well away from any fruit, is about the best I can offer.

Another suggestion. Blocked gizzard/foreign body obstruction? Has he been eating anything odd like fibres from wool, rope, curtains, fabric, paper etc from around the house or some new toy? It causes them to drink more water and either get watery poop, or larger weird poops. Plus leaning forward as they get pain in their intestines. The symptoms are also similar to metal poisoning and can only be ascertained by x-ray if I remember rightly.

Oh god I hope not, a blood test would confirm if he has diabetes. Speaking from experience (i.e. I have type 1 diabetes) he will (as Hezz said) need to avoid fruit because of the sugar content. Looks like it maybe able to be treated too (without injections hopefully) but it will mean a lifelong condition with regular medicating. I have just had a quick look on the net and fond this: Bird DiabetesI hope you get answers real soon Matt, take care and let us know how he gets on xx
