This morning something weird happened to Boo.
Boo was on my shoulder as I was leaning in to get something out of the fridge. He suddenly ended up inside the fridge, trying to perch on something, but couldn't. I thought he'd just dived in of his own volition, but I pretty soon discovered something had suddenly gone wrong with his leg or foot. Not sure which.
It had seized up, maybe paralysed. He tried flying and landing on a few things, but couldn't manage it.
I picked him up and could see his claw was bunched up somewhat and not working. I caught him, very easily - just picked him up in my hand, which is not normal for the swift-flighted, highly alert, will not be caught, Boo. I put him in his cage on a perch, which he fell off straight away, then he climbed back up and just sat there - kind of in shock at what was happening.
I left him there, just watching him for about 10 minutes. Then he slowly came good.
That was at around 7.30am this morning. It's now 7.30pm and he's been okay for the rest of the day.
Any ideas on what might have happened, or be happening? I didn't notice or see him injure his foot, and while there is that possibility, I really don't think so. He was on my shoulder. And I didn't hear him scream, which he does if he's hurt himself somehow.
If it's some kind of nerve thing, I'm hoping he hasn't got some kind of big tumour inside. Stroke? Or could it be like a human cramp?

Although I can't be of any help I'm afraid, I'm sorry to hear that stace. Perhaps as you say he got a bit of cramp, lets hope its nothing more serious. Sounds like he is ok now, so hopefully all will be well.

Was he holding it any differently stace? I would have thought that budgies could get sort of a cramp if they have been sat idle for a while - after all, they have a flap to get the blood circulating again so why not if he has been sat for a while that his foot "went to sleep" for a bit? As we all know it would panic a bird more-so as they dont understand why it is happening. Something else (dunno if you vet knows anything about this) but dont birds have "shunts" in their legs stopping blood supply? Like why dont ducks every have frostbite on their feet when standing on a frozen lake or pond - its because of this shunt to stop blood flow. Could that be something that happened with Boo? Am glad he is alright now tho, lets hope it is just a temporary thing

There is occasions when Whiskers will clench his right leg/foot like a fist and then watch it as it is stretched out in front of him and then clenched again. He watches the motion a few times as though it was involuntary. He has never fallen over with it so I would imagine it is different to what Boo experienced.

It sounds more like a nerve spasm (or possibly cramp) than anything else, to me. If he had hurt it that badly I don't imagine it would have come good that quickly, if that makes any sense. Start to worry if it becomes a regular thing, though.

Well, he's been okay today. It was strange and concerning, but I'm looking on the bright side and putting it down to some kind of weird cramp for the meantime and hoping it's not going to happen again. samwiseg, he just been on my shoulder, not doing anything abnormal, and suddenly slid off me into the fridge.

Well, he's been fine since. I'm hoping it was much ado about nothing and that we shall never need to speak of it again.

Fingers crossed Stace. It may have been a muscle spasm, similar to what we can get. Let's hope nothing more.

Boo just had another episode late yesterday afternoon, so we're off to the vet tomorrow morning to see what he's got to say. Exactly the same as last time. It was very distressing for us both. Maybe it's environmental. Something like metal poisoning. Possible, though I doubt it. But at least my vet can tell me that for certain. I have to catch him up (lord, give me strength ) and then pack the little tike up for the hour's drive out there. He's not going to be happy.

Could it be the sudden change to cold air coming from the fridge? Just a thought. I assume you opened the fridge again.
