That's a lovely looking mix Shirls. Bet they enjoy that. They love veg of all kinds don't they? Sweet corn is one of their favourites, we buy the unsalted tinned ones or frozen. I give mine Alisons wholemeal Seeded batch, bread every evening in winter, along with either mixed corn, live crickets, live meal worms or pasta. I give them something before they go to bed as gives them something to break down for warmth over night. We don't eat Alinsons bread ourselves, we buy it purely for the chickens as they love it. They also love the live food.

Have you ever given yours porridge starlingqueen? I tried them with it a while ago, but they weren't too keen and I understood that warm porridge for supper was a good snack along with their night time corn etc. to keep them warm.

I seem to remember giving it to them a long while ago but can't remember if they liked it or not. Probably not or they would still be having it. I think anything that takes a while to "digest" will help them generate heat for the hours when they don't eat. Carbohydrates I would think, that's why porridge is recommended I suppose?

Isn't nature clever and aren't the chooks lucky getting a nice feed in the evening to keep them warm overnight. Is their own body heat all they need or is their heating in the coop too? If there were dogs I'd say their coats look healthy and glossy ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) Their feathers do look good. Have they come on in leaps and bounds since they first arrived?

Have they come on in leaps and bounds since they first arrived? No Jenny they don't need any form of heating, they carry their own duvet round with them!!! Also when they go to sleep in their little compartment they sleep on top of each other so they keep each other warm. Just imagine how hot it will be for them when I get the other three! You ought to see their feathers in the sunshine - they glisten and yes they have come on leaps and bounds indeed. I weighed them a few weeks back now and Georgie weighs 7lbs 5oz and Bea is just under 7lbs! I have to make sure that they don't put on too much weight apparently as it is bad for them - just as it would be for our buds and other pets. I am told Buff Orps are very lazy but I must say my two run round the garden at times so I think they get enough exercise to keep the weight down.
