Poor baby. Her beak is so overgrown. Why do people let their animals get like that? It's so sad.

its not only overgrown but really thick at the bottom, well this is a sad one cause her previous owner loved her dearly and didn't know he was doing anything wrong ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Do their beaks need to be trimmed or is this a sort of one off? How do you stop it?

its going to take a bit of work from the vet and its all down to nutrition, if they are on the wrong diet the beaks grow quickly and can get deformed, feed them right and they are healthy, also giving them things to chew to naturally wear down their beaks helps, poor thing cant even preen herself properly

Just catching up with post's, poor little soul, you have beak issues of your own with her and a bit more than a clip with the nail clippers ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) . Will the vet do a bit at a time for her, i would assume that she would have to be put under anesthetic with this. I hope she turns around love her, do you know how old she is.

You are taking on and doing such a grand job porthos. Must be heart-breaking sometimes, but at least if the animals/birds have a short life with you, they certainly have the love and care they deserve from you.

thanks everyone for your lovely comments xx yes Skysmum you are spot on she will have to be gassed and bits done at a time, this might sound harsh but she wont be going to the vet yet, they wont put her under until she is a little healthier which is fair enough, she is able to eat, not preen the best but she is getting regular showers and if im worried about anything she will go straight in, she is copying really well on her new diet and not screaming for the old one which I thought she would, not sure if I told you but her old diet consisted of several mini jammy dodgers everyday as these were her favourite, marmite on toast with loads of butter, baked beans, chips, nothing but sunflower seeds and several other bad things ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) she did however get some fruit and chicken and some veg so this is the only reason I think she has lasted as long as she has, she is 21 yrs old, the chap had had her from a chick and really didn't know he was doing anything wrong, this might sound extreme but I really think you should have to take a course before owning a bird, this is such a common thing. if we can get the liver to repair itself and her kidney function gets better there is a strong chance she will go on to lead a good life as she is still so young for an ammie but however long we have with her she will be a well looked after loved birdie ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) xxx

Oh my goodness porthos, what a rubbish diet for the poor bird. As you say, it's a wonder she has survived this long. How come you now have Lolly, did her previous owner realise there was a lot wrong?

sadly his wife passed away and he could no longer care for her, his job means he works away and I think she was getting left on her own, he did however want the best for her which is why he contacted the charity, we had a phone call that basically said if we didn't pick her up she would have been left on her own for days, I don't want to paint a bad picture of the guy though cause he was very distressed by everything and didn't want her left, he said he is losing his best friend and really didn't know he was doing anything wrong, I haven't told him how poorly she actually is cause I think it would honestly break his heart after losing his wife ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Goodness me Porthos that is terrible, thank goodness you have her. I agree about courses before owning birds and I think the same should be applied with regards to children! That's me on my high horse.
I really hope she gets better, you just want to love her. Good luck

Aaawwww bless. Lovely pictures. She looks a very happy birdie. ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) I've just had a thought porthos, is it OK for Lolly to be so close to that light? I know with our budgies, their bird light should be at least 18" away from them. But I bow to your superior knowledge if I am wrong. ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

wow there superior knowledge???!! I don't think so, learning all the time! yes its ok she doesn't stay like that for long and if they are more than 18" away they don't get the benefit so you are right on that, I think she was only doing that cause its the first time she has seen a light!
