I would love to do the same eventually. When I'm in the same room I leave his door open and when I'm decompressing by watching a show at night I'm near his cage and talking to him with the door open. He doesn't have interest yet but he doesn't seem bothered by it being open or closed other than accidentally dropping it down on a few occasions. He eats and other normal behaviors regardless. I suppose that's good for him considering.

That all sounds like exactly what I do with Doiglas in between training sessions, a lot in based on our instincts too, as they are social birds and we are social as humans, it fits that we all want company. When I go to another room and he can't see me he often calls and chatters more - I imagine him shouting Where have you gone! Come talk to me mum! Haha

That's adorable. Basal hasn't gotten to that stage, but he was older than your Douglas when I got him. It's only been a little over 2 weeks so we have made huge strides. Honestly I told my husband I wouldn't thank him for the bird unless he survived a few months in. Silly, but I'm that kind of worrier. Every time it looks like Basal is getting more comfortable my heart is lightened.

I keep forgetting Basal was so much older, you really are doing amazingly well now I think on it. Buds really do lighten your heart don't they, keep up the good work, I don't think I've seen any pics, do you have any?

Right now it's just the avatar picture. I have one that I really love when we were training outside the cage but I look awful from being worn out from school. I may still use it.

Oh bless you, nobody minds what you look like! You just know it will be the beautiful bud that everyone will be looking at anyway

This was one of the first out of cage training sessions. We had to go to the bedroom because otherwise he just wanted back in the cage, but he did very well.
0323151538a by waterfox602, on Flickr He looks downright angry here and was probably a bit more than fed up with me. He wouldn't even touch the millet. He may have been a bit put off from me using my husband's bigger, fancy phone too. 2015040395144050 by waterfox602, on Flickr He's been so quiet and since he hasn't really gotten interested in toys yet I feel so bad that he just sits there. I do step up lessons every little bit and talk to him, but otherwise he doesn't move around the cage much. He will go eat at least. Because he's molting (lots of pinfeathers right now) I've offered a little egg and sweet corn every day. Not a lot since he has yet to eat much, but I put some seeds in it and he'll at least eat the seeds.

Basal is beautiful! More than beautiful, he is handsome and regal. I imagine him wanting to be boss but with your patient and loving training, he will be a wonderful companion. Well done there Rae

I'll be sure to tell him you said he was regal I love seeing everyone's birds. I love Douglas's colors. A year ago I would have never thought I would be a bird person. I got on at the zoo as a volunteer and the first department that took me was avian. I've really grown since moving (yeah I'm leaving a lot out in this shortened story). One day Basal will be greeting me every time I come in the room and hanging out while I do homework or playing outside his cage in some way, I've got to remember that. He won't always be the quiet shy bird he is right now.

He is gorgeous, Rae, and you are so right, he will not always be the shy little fella that you have now. he has to learn to trust you fully before he will open up to you.

A beautiful little creature, I mean the budgie. He will grow up and I'm sure he will warm and trust you. Just have patience and enjoy the training and his company.

Thank you all. It really makes me feel better that all of you think I'm doing a good job. I mean, I'm not doing anything bad at all. Slow purposeful movements, patient training, lots of vocal interaction (not as much physical yet), radio, offered foods and toys though not much has been interacted with on his part. But I was starting to worry maybe I was pushing things a bit by taking him out of the cage even though he didn't want to. Now I wasn't doing this every day, or for very long, but just a trip to the bathroom or bedroom where he could roam supervised and work on bonding.

Hey guys, hope you don't mind another update. I took his favorite toy mirror thing out in preparation for taking him out since that seems to help and he flew right out the cage door after the toy! He was much more active even though he wasn't interested in leaving the top of the cage, but it gave him some exercise and we ran through training a little. On the top of the cage he's more about backing up than stepping up. I got a lovely picture of him though. 1428617400798 by waterfox602, on Flickr
