She didn't seem to want to feed her first chick so I had to hand feed him twice before she started to. This little guy was soooo hungry, he cheeped his little head off and gulped the milk down. I'm no doubt going to worry about him all night. I swear they give me grey hairs haha!

Didn't I read about that being not so unusual, somewhere recently? Don't ask me where; my head has its own fog cloud these days. Hope Peggy gets the idea really soon.

Looks like I needn't have worried though, when I checked the nestbox this morning little bub had a full crop so Peggy has finally started feeding him. Now I'm off for a shower and then I'll make them up some veggies with egg food before heading off to work. Fingers crossed the next egg hatches today x

skysmum, as I remember it went something like needing a stimulus to get the hen feeding and somehow after the first chick has that first feed it all kicks in .....I wonder if it has to do with being newly hatched the chick does have the vocal power to get mum's attention, because they often say to put in a good strong older chick to get the hen feeding ....... she can't ignore the bigger chick. Shrug.

Shrug. Yep that's all ringing a bell and being a first time hen i think, some arn't quite sure what to do. You would think that would be a very powerful reflex but as you say if the chick is quite she has no stimulus.

So this morning I was very baffled. I'd been expecting egg three to hatch between last night and this morning. Checked the nestbox and...nope. But then I noticed something odd. Egg 2 was still there (I have them numbered but Peggy turns them so it can be hard to see) Queue my confused face haha! So I checked the eggs thinking maybe egg one had hatched extremely late, it was due to hatch last Friday, but no, egg one was there too. Egg 3 is the one that little bub came from! A day early! Which means 1 and 2 didn't hatch and all going well egg 4 should hatch tomorrow. I'm very confused as to why egg three hatched early but I'm still happy that bub is here Hopefully he won't be an only child.
