In all honesty I don't think there is one correct size. With natural tree branches there is a multitude of sizes, even one branch the size should vary from position to position on the branch.Too thick and the budgie will not curl the foot, too thin and the budgie will clamp the foot. This is why the experts will always say get a mixture of thickness's. The reason I asked the question was, as I am sure you realize, you could give rise to the problem again if you don't correct it.

What OP has said is basically it: they need a variety of thicknesses, plus they need a variety of textures and also a variety of angles so they aren't always sitting flat - trees are generally not that accommodating to only grow branches out horizontally. What I try to do each week when I change everything and wash is to give them one thick perch, one thinner, two in the middle and mix up the type of bark as well so they have at least one that is a bit rough and one that is quite smooth, and again two somewhere in between. A middling perch is one where their feet reach about two-thirds of the way around, if that gives you some idea of where to start.

Thanks everyone. Re the branches..I do put in thin and thick branches but maybe the thicker ones were too thick...we live and learn and I appreciate all the advice everyone contributes...I'm not an expert by any means and having a forum like this where I can ask without being abused is a great feeling...one you don't get on many forums these days I can tell you. I will try and work out a new pattern of branches for the cage and see if I can make some changes and improvements. x Shirls how is your budgies feet? I have left Ruby for a week and got her out this morning and her feet are well healed and look so much better...the only problems is that now she's feeling better she's also feeling fruity and is hitting on BB's man, Eric and it's not going down too well... BB has moulted all her flight feathers on her right wing and can't fly properly until they grow back so getting around and fending off a much younger bird is making her more determined to keep Eric close by Hope everyone's budgies are happy and well...keep me posted. x

So happy that Ruby's feet look better. As for the other ........ it seems to be the time for sexed-up budgies at the moment. A number of us are having the same problems!

Thanks...I suppose what I think to be comfortable isn't for my birdies...will definitely get some more branches and have a change around...must think more like a bird and less like a human... x

Thanks for asking H2O, but Harvey's feet are still the same - no better and no worse!! We're off to the vet next week to get some AB's. I have bought him a nice rope perch, (the only one I have so far) and plan to get one or two more so they can all benefit with the softness of the rope.

How's Harvey's feet? Got Ruby out yesterday and her feet are as good as new...two weeks without any treatment, can't be bad.

Thanks for asking H2O, have answered this on another post but I did resort to taking Harvey to the vet. I now have a solution to put on his feet twice a day for 7 days. It's called 'Surolan' and is usually used as ear and skin treatment for cats and dogs!!! He's had it on now 6 times so another 8 doses to go. Got to admit, they do seem very, very slightly better. They never got any better or worse with my treatment anyway. So glad to hear that Ruby is ok now, wonderful news.
