Here you go Marianne Marlow - some recent pics. I was under the impression that due to being a recessive pied, the cere would not turn blue and would instead remain purple/pink in males and pale brown in hens. But I must admit there is lots of conflicting info out there regarding gender in mutations! (And no, I don't generally feed Chirpy money, but he/she is obsessed with coins so it was a quick way to get a close up shot of the cere as he/she tried to grab it!!)

Hmm. Looking more like a boy in these pics. I had a recessive pied, very similar to this one and he had a pink cere like this too. The nares do not look that white.. I am thinking boy now. What do you guys think? starlingqueen ?

Sorry to hijack your post simone but I could have written this. Our budgie is 10 weeks old and is biting. He's very sociable, happy and confident (hand tamed by the breeder) but has started biting. Specifically the kids and my OH ears. The kids have taken to wearing hats and earmuffs! He'll be free range, playing on top of his cage and then the next thing he'll have landed on a child and within seconds he's munching an ear. Not good. I'm reluctant to put him in his cage as "punishment" as I want him to love his cage. We try and intercept as soon as we see him going in for the kill but that's not always possible. The breeder has told us to tap his beak (I'm uncomfortable with this and have decided against it, we don't hit the kids or the dog, why would I hit the budgie?) and he's also suggested he's having too much out of cage time and considers our lounge his cage. I wanted him to be as free range as possible and only locked away at night and when we are out. Am I being unrealistic? Please tell me it's just a baby phase!! Again, sorry simone! Does it help that we're in it together?

I tap Pippin on the beak doesn't make any difference at all. Jo went through this and had come out the other side. Just a teenager rebelling, hopefully he will get out of this, well I am hoping too. One of the others had a bitey budgie, I am sure it was Bailey and he has calmed down. Pippin about 19 weeks old and getting better

Hi splodge, just wondering how the kids are reacting when he does nibble at their ears etc.? Budgies are super smart - if they are reacting with excited squeals he might be thinking "yeah, this is fun". I realise it's hard, but might be worth trying the technique I used with Teddy - I appreciate it's hard for kids not to squeal. Not saying it will work with every budgie, but it's worth a try if your kids feel super brave.

We've told them just to stand statue still fluffball and not react. He has made my 4 year old cry a few times though so he did get a reaction! This is why we try to preempt his attacks! Since I posted this he's been great though. Maybe name and shame was all he needed!

Bailey used to be exactly the same and thankfully grew out of it. Still get their bite but more a sharp beaked kiss and over zealous nibble. Beautiful bud btw

Well, Blithe does just as this bird does too. He lands on our hands or shoulders and bites us. He is definitely doing it for attention though! My Holly does that too Marianne. She loves to snuggle in the Crook of my neck behind my ear but she will push her luck and chomp on the loose skin around my knuckles, or worse, bite my earlobe which does make me squeal haha! Beat advice I can give it to not react with a shout, squeal or shaking her off, that will make her think it's a game. I do the "No!" in a firm voice and point at her with my index finger. She eventually gets the point.
