Hi suesbird. If you want them to sprout just put them in a tub etc and leave a loose lid on and place them on the window sill or kitchen side, and after a few days you'll see them sprout. They do need to breath. Once mine have soaked in boiled water, I just rinse them several times, drain for a few minutes in a sieve, and put them in the tub. If you put them in the fridge then they won't sprout, but are good for around 5 days of feeding. Remember to sniff a sweet smell for good, and a strong vinegary smell for bad.
My buds love the soaked seed, but I only soak the Bravo, and not the Tonic. Are you using Haith's? Haith's Bravo mix has groats in it, I think it was you asking about groats?
Daz
Edit: Don't dry them off, just rinse, drain and tip into a tub.

I have the bravo seed, I did what you said but nothing happened, I left the lid lose but they just dried up so after a week I threw them out in case they went off. That's why I wondered if you had any kind of moisture in with them as well.
I will go and soak some more now. Thanks Sue

If they do dry up suesbird, just give them a fresh rinse every day. You can also rinse them in an F10 solution if you're worried about any nasties. Make up a washing up bowl of F10, put the seed in a sieve and dip the seed in the bowl several times. Don't rinse the F10 off, just put them back in the tub.

Darren I did the seeds in boiling water for 24 hours, rinsed them and put them in a container but nothing happened, do you leave them dry or on a damp piece of kitchen roll, with or without light? suesbird, this might have been your problem or was that just a brain-block? You don't want your water boiling, as in hot; you want your water boiled, as in sterilised. Hot or boiling water will kill them, unless they are some species of eucalypt that need a bushfire to germinate.

Lol, suesbird, boiled water is water that HAS boiled, whereas boiling water is water that IS boiling. Did you keep it boiling for 24 hrs? Your fuel bill will be expensive
I bet they were nice and soft afterwards though oh bless you, I meant as Hezz has said, boiled as in sterilising the water for safe soaking, and then the F10 if you so wish. Thankfully Haith's seed is extremely extra clean in comparison to pet shop seed, but I've never seen any creepy crawlies in the seed.

Noooooooooo I only boiled the kettle once and poured some on the seed!!!! In my defence it could mean boiled water that had not long boiled. Ok I admit it I had a senior moment or two!
