Dont know if any of your can help on this one? I am thinking that Alfie has an iodine deficiency. He has got a swollen neck (possibly a goitre) so much so it is making his neck feathers grow at odd angles, has started to regurgitate a lot and generally look lethargic and is sleeping more. I have checked him out this morning and although he is trying to convince me he is fine, his feathers and body language are telling me another story So according to information on this condition in birds, a stock solution of Lugol's Iodine Tincture is the way forward. However, my question is this: If I administer this into the buds water, will it be detrimental at all to the other birds? As I will have to give Alfie this for the rest of his life as it is incurable (as I also know about this as I have the condition myself)! Any advice or comments appreciated

Obviously I can't diagnose the problem. But reading between the lines a bit, it would seem you are not sure of your diagnosis. My question has to be if giving this Tincture could be harmful, would it not be wise to get a proper diagnosis, before administering anything?

samwiseg if the goiter is actually visible then I think it would be quite advanced and I'd take him to the vet.

Thanks for your comments I have felt for a goitre and can't find one but that doesn't mean anything as I am no vet! He is eating and drinking normally and his poops are normal. I have separated him off from the others tho, as he has lost 4g in weight so I will be attempting to feed him up over the next couple of days. Can't get appointment at the vets till next week but shall endeavour to monitor until I can get him to the vet. Wish us luck My poor little guy

Ohhhh poor little chap . Oddly i was reading about this the other day because my lot are often at the iodine blocks. It would seem he may have to have injections to kick start the intake. Have you started to put it in the water sam, im sure it wont hurt the others you just have to get the dose right otherwise too much is toxic. Could you not get an emergency appointment at the vets. I know its not ideal but pets at home have vets on all weekend and the guy at mine is great in an emergency, ive just rang and gone before.

It looks more like it could be a crop impaction to me. I would get an appointment with a vet as soon as possible.

samwiseg, I doubt it is a goitre, either. An iodine deficiency can start to affect the reproductive organs and cause the cere of cocks to resemble a hen's. Alfie's is lovely and blue still. A goitre would have taken longer to get to the stage that this is; you would have noticed other problems earlier on, I think. That is my humble opinion, anyway. Hope you get a good diagnosis from your vet. Good luck to you and Alfie.
