Now for my considered opinion: I would take everything out and swing the perches around the other way, running front to back of the cage, leave the centre of the cage clear for freedom of movement, place the toys to the sides of the cage, get hook-on feeders so food and water can be up high, replace the dowel perch with proper tree branches, and have just the one cotton perch. By leaving the centre of the cage free, you will allow Billie to get some exercise playing by himself when he is shut in. But the reason I have the perches left to right is because of the huge door

Food and water up near the highest perch keeps them from being soiled from above. If you position your perches so that there is room for him to turn around and not be up against the bars of the cage then you have room to position food pots near the perches and not run the risk of them being pooped in. The cleaner his food and water can be kept, the better, surely?

What are the dimensions of the cage? It does look rather small.

Could you keep the big door shut and just use the opening where the bath is? I think there was another opening anyway?! It would be better to position the perches the other way to what you have them. It is a fairly small cage, I shouldn't be shocked that the photo has a cockatiel in it on their website but that's 'pets at home' for you!

It is quite small, but I would bet that the store told you it was perfect for a budgie. If Billie has lots of outside time, it might be okay; it is fine for the short term, but I seriously would look at getting something that was at least 60cms in length. Height is not so important.

He does get a lot of outside time. At the minute he's living in my room with me. (Army barracks) so like a hotel room with en-suite. He has enough room to fly circuits. Me and the Mrs are moving into s house in March so this cage might have to do until then or until we can find a suitable one. If anyone has any links to suitable cages then please comment. Cheers. Always open to advice and criticism

We got our cage off eBay. It's like yours but the two storey version. I think I paid £15. Just make sure there isn't any rust with second hand cages and give them a good clean with avian disinfectant or a steam cleaner. Check gumtree and free cycle too.

So now billie looks like he is obsessed with getting out. Is this normal behaviour? He's just started it today

And now he is still and quiet in his usual "go to" spot when he comes out. Advice please

I didn't realise the food and water pots came with lids, I've had these upside down all week. And then it dawned on me today.

Yeah totally normal don't worry Sky (my budgie) when I first got her would go ape, side to side trying to get out, like.. constantly!! I thought she had lost the plot lol, but they do calm down. It's all still quite new for him but it's nothing to worry about. As long as he is getting time out of the cage then he'll be fine. I also would recommend not leaving the door open so he can get in and out himself as it's better that he gets used to you being in control of putting him in and out. Is he easy to get back in the cage? Sky is nearly 1 and still a nightmare

Thanks for those links, the piano 6 does look quite a bit more spacious than my current setup. And I like the front to back perches. I know you said you had the '5' but could you take a picture of your cage so I can see the actual space it takes up. Cheers.

Thanks for your advice.
