Hi Matt, I wondered where you and Puck had got to.
By the way, you mentioned shredding the celery stalks a little to encourage them to eat it a while back. I tried it, and it worked brilliantly. Nyum nyum. Thanks for the tip.

I'm back at work now, so tired and sick of the computer in the evening, lovely having him waiting for me. I feel sorry for him being left at home, though he seems fine when I get back. Me going back to work has happened earlier than I'd expected, I was hoping to get him a friend before I returned. My partner would like him to be talking before we get another in case it hinders his progress there, I'm not really fussed though. I guess I'll pick a date after my holiday (which is coming up) and if he's not talking by then get him a friend. Glad to hear tearing it helped! Puck will go for anything stringy ... earlier I was eating a banana which he wasn't really interested in it till he saw the stringy bits on the peel Him actually eating his extra foods is pretty new as well, previously he'd just tear them apart In terms of Puck's firsts, we've had a few ... He's tried apple and pear for the first time, only a few little nibbles and only if I'm trying to eat it I'd offered them early on but he showed no interested then. He's got one of those little trolleys with a small plastic T bar perch that comes off it, his new trick is trying to fly while clutching that in his feet. He's actually got it nearly a couple of feet off the ground before dropping it. (edit: just looked on the front page and realise I'd already talked about his ) I do love that trolley, has us in bits when he pushes it around He has a collection of cat balls and ping pong balls he runs around after on the floor until they get stuck in a corner, then he cant get them out and just keeps beaking them. He's showing signs now he realises he can get them out with his feet but appears to lack the dexterity. Thanks for the interest

Love Puck's little trolley!
Keep the radio on for him while you're out, if you don't already.

Love Puck's little trolley! Keep the radio on for him while you're out, if you don't already. Yeah I have been - not sure that going to help with the talking though (obviously more important though!). I think I need to set it up on a timer so he gets some quiet time as well - normally he likes to have a nap around 3pm

I'm surprised Puck hasn't begun talking already. You need to talk to him directly, when he's in a "learning' mood. Those times when he's on your finger, close to your face, and just sort of looking inquisitively at you. They can't be in that frantic 'play with me!" state. Probably just before his 3pm nap time would be a good typical learning time.
Also, make the phrase very simple to start with. You can tell when they are listening intently and absorbing the info, as they sort of stare at you.

I get when you mean, I think its probably my fault for not saying the same thing enough - I tend to just talk silly rubbish to him instead and call him all kinda of different names Today he let me stroke his head several times from back to front. Not the first time in itself, but the first time I've been allowed to without working round from his cheek to the back of his head. He seems more fond of me stroking his cheeks now as well because he'll rub his head on me or fluff up more readily

Yesterday I was a bit busy and Puck only got an hour out of the cage, I felt pretty guilty so today when I went to work I left him out! I've only left him out once before when I've been gone for an extended period and then when I returned he appeared to be stuck behind my computer sitting on a cable However, after months of him being allowed to do as he wants all day that's the only time my intervention has been required - so I was pretty confident. This time I set up a webcam so I could keep an eye on him. Frankly that might have been more worrying because some times I'd check and he'd not be in the picture ;D Well I got home and he had a feather sticking out his wing at a funny angle "ohh no my poor boys wing!" I exclaimed gently touching said feather ... but then he reached down and just waggled it loose lol phew

"Oh my poor boys wing" that's so endearing Matt I know of another member that has a webcam on while she is at work so that she can watch her budgies. I leave mine out all day unless we are having works done or they are having a "fight" day and cannot be trusted.

I've decided that I'm going to start taking Puck out of his room, I've taken him into the kitchen a few times in the last few day and he seems quite uneasy so I think it's worth addressing When I say 'taken him' its completely of his own doing, over 50% of the time when I go to leave 'his' room he'll fly to my shoulder, so I just walk out with him on me He does seem quite uneasy in other rooms, he'll go thin and quiet (but not panting or beaking tapping) - I talk to him softly telling him all the time "its ok" and being careful not to make too much noise. He does fly off my shoulder some times but will only do a couple of laps of the room before landing on me again. When I've done it I'm the only one in the house, all the appliances in the kitchen are cold and most importantly as we have no blinds on the window, its dark outside so there is lots of reflection on the windows. In 'his room' there are blinds on the windows all the time so he has never learnt about glass - but from my previous budgie I found getting him out when it was dark and there was lots of lights on would provide lots of glare off the glass making it visible. I should point out that budgie died from flying into said glass during the day but because a christmas tree was in his normal flight path between perches in his room - despite him knowing the glass was there for years its a long way from fool proof. Our current place isn't perfectly budgie proof but having tried it a few times now I can see roaming makes him nervous and its something I'd like to address with him now rather than when we move (hopefully late this summer). After a while in the kitcehn he did relax and was cheaping to me a lot, he did a few laps of the room whilst screaming (in that over excited budgie king of the world way ;D) I do love having him on my shoulder whilst I walk around, chatting to him; telling him what I'm doing

Ohh yeah and here is us in the kitchen, doing 'a myspace' in the mirror He loves this new hoodie, the hood is thick enough for him to stand on comfortably and the zip is great fun to play with ;D

For the first time in ages I offered Puck a bath! The last few times he'd turned his nose up, but this time as I've left it so long I was sure he'd get in and sure enough: And looking slightly soggy afterwards As you can see in this picture and the video, he only really gets his frontu (hehe that U was Puck jumping on my keyboard:)). I tried filling it up more but then he hopes straight out - I guess I just need to keep offering it
