Oh my, yes.....eat eaters are hard to break of their habit. I had an egg droo on the garage floor, it broke & three of my girls pounced on it! They loved it. I had to keep pushing them away to clean it up. I noticed a few eggs had been rolled out of the nests & broken after that. So i started making more frequent trips to the coup to retrieve them before they had a chance to eat them. Little huzzies.

I have moved the posts that were below this - all about Asha's chooks to their own thread - called, oddly enough, Asha's Chooks.

Isn't nature a wonderful thing? Each egg that Lola has laid, and she now lays every day, is 2g heavier than the last one. I'm wondering how large they will become, we are up to 52g today. Georgie used to lay large eggs and once she laid a 68g one!! Today, Lola excelled, she actually laid the egg in the NEST BOX!!!! All the others she has dropped just plain anywhere!!! Extra treat for her later!!

Well done, Lola .......Shirls, do you ever think that she might be a little confused, due to her name??? But hopefully first egg in the box is only the first of many. Nothing from the others yet?

Why??? Hezz. Am I missing something here?? Tilly is getting ready to lay, she squats when you put your hand near her, and flutters her wings, which is a good sign.

Just thinking about the other Lola on the forum and the song ....... sorry, that was probably a bit obtuse ..... Gender confusion, transsexual etc .................. doesn't matter .... really.

Progress...... Tilly laid her first egg yesterday. She, like Lola wasn't sure what was happening so dropped the egg on the grass instead of the nest box. Lola hasn't showed her what to do yet! Lola now always lays in the box. Great confusion this morning, they both have their egg brains in, so they have both been in the same nest box, but still no eggs! Tilly has made a lovely nest in the hay in the box and even Phoebe had a little re-arranging to do in there (she's nowhere near laying yet either). They have both been in and out of the box all morning. I even showed Tilly the other nest box (put her inside too), but she wants to use Lola's box. Updates to follow, soon I hope!

Quick update: Lola showed Tilly where to lay her egg, so today we had two eggs, in the same nest box, one at each end! Yaaaay! Clever girlies!

It's amazing how they learn from each other the way you want them. They could just as easily learned to lay their eggs on the path ar something. It is so interesting.

Tilly could have laid her egg in the other nest box like I showed her to OP! There must be something special about the nest box on the left hand side. By the time Tilly had finished with it there was a proper 'nest' in the hay.

Could that be the flock instinct?

Could that be the flock instinct? Not sure on that one OP. I understand that chooks have their favourite nesting places and will queue up if their place is occupied by another hen laying, thereby holding on to the egg they have to lay. They are almost as weird as budgies!!!

It sounds like they every bit as weird. It must be birds in general that have some similar traits.
