After a few mail requests to explain free flight or recall, here is a short vid that explains free flying
I know this is mainly a budgerigar site, the last bird is pewee, a 7yo budgie who is Archie's parent But I hope the video shows that the basic principals are the same for all birds. So please forgive me for showing not only Budfies but also different species of birds in the video.
Please please do not try this with your budgie that has had next to no training,,, he will vanish, never to be seen again, up to 2 years training has been done on these birds, they are under under our total control at all times. The harnesses and jessies do not harm the birds in any way, they do enjoy the outdoor flights, in fact KoKo the albino cockatiel will fly through hoops, throw a plastic ball with holes in it and he eagerly retrieves it. But the basic fly to hand commands at the beginning of the video can save your bird if it ever gets out, A very handy and relatively easy trick to teach your bird Hope you enjoy it Shewy

Quite a feature film for your first video clip Shewbert. I found it quite compelling to watch as I didn't know what was coming next. Well done. I will have to play the second one in a different browser as some give an error in opera.

Some people really make me cringe,,, Yes it is Shewy's, get it off my chest moment. Been a typical and mundane day, nothing much going on until we received a call from a local rspca officer. They had confiscated many animals from a shed behind a house. Being a bit bored I said that I would call out and meet them at the premises. Well this place was obviously owned by a shady bird dealer. There were parrots everywhere, from squawks to adults, full of mites and almost featherless. Please do not scrool down and view the photos if you are a bit squeamish about animal cruelty the photos show birds that have plucked out their feathers due to a massive mite infestation, these are the better of the parrot photos as I wouldn't wish to offend anyone. These so called parrot breeders need locking away, not just given a small fine. The birds sell for anything up to £2,000 each, they do not care about the bird,, just the money. Just a footnote all of the birds will survive, might take a long time and a few sleepless nights to bring them back to their former glory though. Rant over, feel a little better. Shewy Scroll down for photos.

Poor birds, thank you so much for rescuing them. People can be so stupid, greedy and cruel. I agree that they should be locked up. That's why I signed and shared this petition: petition.parliament.uk/petitions/104779

I feel that people that keep animals in such condition should be locked away in the same sort of conditions. Well done for rescuing these helpless creatures. I really do hope they all survive. As you say the mental scars may take some time to heal, but now they have a chance. You are a good man.

How terrible. I hope they all recover quickly although like others have said, the mental scars will remain forever.

Still in work working on all of our new residents. The African grey was thoroughly bathed in a lovely saline solution, a couple of injections (vitamins and antibiotics) left quiet for a few hours. I just gave him another bath and he had a coating of Vaseline on his skin and a woolly jumper on. He is now eating like mad and looking for more, but not allowed too much at moment as his stomach needs time to accept it. This was not abuse for a few days, it has been going on for many months, but amazingly he was nuzzling into me and said Jacob's a handsome boy, so his name is now Jacob.
Little white Cockatoo, less than half the weight he should be, been bathed (didn't like it at all) he is on anti-inflammatory drugs, vitamins and antibiotics, being strictly crop fed, he has a intibite collar on, again hates it, he is sleeping it off in a covered cage to keep him calm.
The Scarlet Macaw had to have the rest of her wing feathers taken off, the new feathers would have been distorted if they had stayed on the wings, Again Bathed and treated, had a woolly jumper but shredded it now has collar on and screaming the place down and bashing it against the cage to try to take it off.
Ring neck parrot is ok he seems fine, but he was not with the other birds, we found him in a bedroom in a tiny cage (shown) he will be quarantined, go through a calming training course before being re-homed. We think this one was ready to be sold,, MMmmm semi tame but does bite. Eating and drinking well
29 babies, fraid 3 has had to be put to sleep due to 2 with kidney problems and 1 with an infected open wound, all the rest at the moment being worked on between the vets and staff, but so far looks good. So it looks like a long night ahead feeding, bathing and generally keeping all of them happy.
So that's it so far, this would be easier if Archie didn't think he could type better than I can, he just grabbed a big chunk of my sausage roll and rushed off with it. He is definitely going to be my Christmas lunch, after all he will already be stuffed. Shewy

Thank you for the update @shewbert. I look forward to hearing how they get on, as I am sure others will to. Very sad news about the 3 babies, but at least they had some kindness shown to them.

What amazing work you do. If you weren't down at the other end of the country I'd be knocking on your door to offer help tomorrow. I hope your night passes without any issues.

Those poor animals. I hope with your dedication and kindness these beautiful animals recover. I also hope the person who subjected them to such appalling cruelty, get what they deserve.

Just to let you know it is not only me, I am the animal behaviorist, and I can just muck in with the rest of the team when needed, 90% of the staff are volunteers, including myself.
I get free use of the facilities for my training classes as payment for rehabilitating the centers animals.
My Daughter and Son in laws veterinary practice own the shelter, along with the Paradise Wildlife Park, in which they do a lot of work for.
So without the marvelous and loyal team nothing could be done.
