I was wandering how things were going, you must have posted after i logged off yesterday . The thing is if the hen was giving the first crop milk you may not have seen it as a full crop which is usually the first thing they give. Are you providing moist soft food for the parents?, im sure you must be so if she continues not to feed im afraid you are going to have to step in and hand feed. You may find once the second egg hatches it will kick start her. How old are the parent birds? iv had to feed the little fella again today shes keeping him warm but just not feeding him, the second chicks hatched now aswell, so going to leave them til about 8pm and check again, there over twelve months of age and yes(veg, egg food, seed and sometimes brown rice or mashed boiled egg).

Sometimes you just get a hen that wont, this is when its good to have other breeding pairs, you can foster them to a hen that knows what to do. Just stock up on Kaytee in case you have to hand feed them all and hope for the best , fingers crossed she will get it now the second one is here.

Good job I bought the kaytee in before hand, today when I was feeding the baby, mum and dad where waiting at the door, but dad wouldn't let mum in, he kind of attacked her, but when there in the box there fine together, do u think he could be the problem? Should I try removing him?

I would keep a very close eye on him, she really needs him to feed her, is he feeding her?
If you think he is becoming aggressive towards her or the baby's, remove him, are all the eggs fertile do you know?

Yes he feeds her but when im checking or feeding (hopefully wont after do that again) he sits on the perch of the box and she wants to get on it, and they attack each other, hes more dominant then her and seems nasty, just being over protective I think. So anyway a sad update, chick number 2 died of unknown reasons he didn't seem so strong when I first seen him today, any ideas why he died? On a brighter note, he looked like he had a little milk in his crop, and chick 1 looks like he does too, il take a pic of chick 1 later and see what yous think? As in is it enough? I fed him last at 2 o clock so surely she must have fed him for there to be milk/food there now, fingers crossed she is and chick 2 saved chick 1, with 2 chicks tweeting, feel so sad to have lost 1, but at least my efforts paid off on chick 1.

Ohhh im sorry about chick 2, rip little one . Its the rough with the smooth with breeding, some are just not strong enough to make it. Hopefully things will settle down now she is feeding, first time hens sometimes take a while to get into the swing of it.

I know I had to accept thats these things happen, just upsetting, poor lil thing. So still looking good on the feeding of chick 1, but still not sure about keeping him in as they had another little tiff before, hes ok when shes in the box, but if hes in first he gets a cob on with her,il just have to see how things go, and sorry I forgot to say before 2 more fertile eggs, not checked on them since sunday, with having to feed chick 1, so hopefully all is well. Thanks again for your help.

Yes just keep an eye on dad, its odd that he is getting stroppy about letting her back in the box I think hes trying to take over and shes not happy about it, again just then in the nest box I heard her warning squawking, looked in and she on the eggs/ chick, warning squawking at him, but sometimes she lets him by them . Now hes feeding her at the entrance. Yes hes active, so shes not feeding him well , Il try and get a pic tomorrow and see how things are going.

Oh dear . I wouldn't put veg in the box just millet and a finger draw of moist dry egg food but don't leave the egg food in there for more than 3/4 hours without changing it.
