I have had some very unpleasant comments from people about this. My neighbours, who have a dog, said we should just get another dog, others have said we are mad to waste that kind of money on a dog. I've had a family member say "oh, but he's so old, he'll die soon". We also had someone say, "that's a damned good holiday you're wasting". I may be odd, but I can't understand the mentality of these people. We have some money we where saving to renovate the house before we sell it, we will have to cut back on the cost and give Teddy his eyesight back, there is no question in my mind that we are doing the right thing. If he was frail and clearly "on his last legs" then we wouldn't, but if he can survive a nasty bug and bounce back as fit as ever then he will have a few years in him yet If these people saw him sitting just gazing into space locked in a dark and silent world they would know why we are doing it. If he wasn't deaf as well it may be different, we could help him by calling and making noises but seeing him wander aimlessly, lost in his own house is heartbreaking. It kills me just thinking how he must be so confused all the time.

These people are best ignored SQ. To love an animal, and have that love returned is the best feeling ever. It's hard for those who don't have them, and have never known the love a pet can give to understand this. You go for it, and Teddy will love you even more than he does already for this wonderful gift x

It's none of those other peoples business what you do with your cash anyway. We gave up holidays when we got the birds, how can a holiday be more important than an animals quality of life? (I'm talking in Teddy's case here)

You are both so right and I would never consider a holiday as a good comparison for a dogs quality of life. There is no contest. I don't like holidays anyway and they last a couple of weeks when Teddy's eyesight will last the rest of his life and even if that were a couple of weeks it would still be worth it for him to see us again before he goes. We too gave up holidays a long time ago, we have far too many animals to just up and leave and I'd miss them all. I'm very excited about it and finding it hard to wait for the appointment.

Precisely, even 1 day of Teddy being able to see his family again would be worth it. Hopefully it'll be many years though

I hope you don't have to wait too long before Teddy can have his operation and that all is successful I really do. You may find he goes back to puppyhood for a while Wendy (our little terrier) was given steroids/cortisones by the vet a few weeks ago and what a difference they made. It was a joy to see, now they're finished she's still much improved but not quite so bouncy. Nothing more annoying than people who say 'oh it's just a dog', bird, whatever what'd they know I think holidays are highly overrated myself

Teddy is your dog starlingqueen and you can spend your money how you want. There is no price to put on the health of a pet. Teddy is a lucky boy to have such a lovely owner like you. It doesn't matter how old he is or how long he has, it's about his quality of life in the here and now and if that can be improved then go for it. Fingers crossed that his consultation goes well.

We are back after 4 hours and everything is good. His liver and kidney function is good, not perfect because he is old and diabetic but good enough for him to have the surgery. He's booked in for the 8th of November to have one eye done, only one eye because of his age. We wanted both eyes but the vet said it would be too long an operation for him. I am so pleased, my baby will be able to see again.

That's fantastic news starlingqueen. Is it just the one eye at the moment and the other done at a later date, or will the vet just do the one eye period. What a joy this will be for teddy.

It will just be the one eye. The operation alone will cost £2600 if we could have both done at the same time it would be £3600. The follow up meds and check ups will be a further £600 approximately. So basically over 3 grand. We couldn't afford to have the other eye done at a later date, as it would double the single eye op. We could have just about managed if both were done at the same time.

I would imagine it would be quite a shock to his system to be able to see all of a sudden. Would he be able to handle having both eyes done?
