...when I brought my lads home for the first time. Three days had passed since dear old Joe had died and I decided it was time to get a new pair. I had intended to get another male/female pair but when I saw those two boys together in the pet shop I knew they were the ones, they were also the best looking budgies too, Joey and Twitch.
So today is their "birthday" 28th October, when eight years ago they became part of my life. They had a great life, I told them enough times! They were happy and playful and of course sometimes they could be a couple of rascals. As they had free flight, I soon made the room budgie proof by moving certain things just out of reach but not before discovering they had nibbled at the blinds or the lamp shade. In the early days they would fly down onto the carpet and have a walk around, having the occasional nibble of the skirting boards! But that's their nature, I still smile now when I look at their "work".
I still have their tables where they spent endless hours playing, napping or just looking out of the window. I would hear the pitter patter of their feet as they ran around, especially on the metal casing of the hi-fi, it sounded like they were tap-dancing. These days, my new pair have the luxury of the play gyms and I often think what if the lads had had those...
They didn't have a swing in the cage, why should they when they could fly up to the light shade and swing on that!
I have decided to write this on their birthday rather than wait for the anniversaries of when I lost them. I still think about them every day with mixed emotions, smiling and laughing as I remember them in their prime but also with sadness as I remember their last few days/weeks.
So thank you, Joey and Twitch, for being part of my life for seven years and making me as happy as you were.
Joey decided that you can only swing so much before you have to have a climb
