My Betty passed last Friday night at the vets.... she had been ill for a good week and was getting no better. She seemed to have a respiratory issue, and she couldn't quite get her breath. So when we went to the vets the end of last week they admitted her. We last saw her on Friday around 3pm. Although she looked beautiful as ever, she also looked very poorly. I want to remember her when she was healthy and happy ..... and she was happy with us.
I had never had a budgie before: we'd just had our two dogs. Our local vet put a notice up a few years back that they had a blue budgie to rehome called Peter, along with his cage. I felt so sorry for 'him' that I went down with hubby and gave a donation of £50 for him. We realised quickly that Peter was female, so we renamed her Betty after the famous tearooms. She lived in her cage in our front room, and day by day grew to trust me and would often jump in my palm to eat seed. I would often laugh as she stood in my hand scratching at the seed, making a complete mess!
After a couple of weeks I started to feel she needed company: I had my husband, my dogs had each other to play with, but Betty didn't have another. So we decided to rehome a budgie from the RSPCA. His name was Bertie. Bertie was a very relaxed budgie who fell in love with Betty immediately. The same could not be said about beautiful Betty though; she was a bossy character who had to be in charge at all times. She was always preened to perfection, always immaculate. She was quite a big bird, and always stuck her chest out. She was fabulous.
It wasn't long until hubby bought a second hand aviary from eBay, he wanted to give them somemore freedom to fly. It got built and my two feathered friends went into their new home. They were happy in there, flying about, climbing up the sides, scratching in the bark on the floor. Betty still wouldn't succumb to Bertie's advances however much he tried. Betty never really gave in to anyone's advances no matter how much they tried to romance her,
More unwanted budgies were rehomed. Betty made many friends, and lived a happy life as part of a flock. She would always take food from me when I went in, whereas the others would fly out the way. Betty was very trusting of me, and I appreciated that more than she will ever know.
Betty was the start of something in my life, and I will never look back. She was the first budgie I ever had so therefore the first budgie I ever loved. I hope the three plus years we had together were her happiness, because she certainly gave me a lot of happiness and love.
Fly high Betty, be with your friends already passed and stay as beautiful inside as you were outside. Until we meet again my darling xxxx
