I emailed them to ask if they'd let me have her for free to live with my other 7 birds.
I sent a link to my blog.

£20 even budgies are more expensive in London! I paid £20 for Bonnie & Tyler! Bargain hey This made me think - budgies £20, cage £80!! Budgies - a bargain. Cage + toys + swings + perches......not quite so

They have not got back to me. Guess they're more interested in the money than rehoming the bird to someone who cares.
Oh well, I hope she goes to a good home.

milliej I paid £22.50 for a single bird in 2010 from a pet shop and £40 for a pair in 2009. These are my only experiences of paying for budgies as the other 15 have been rehomes and the owners were glad for them to be given to a good home.

I saw an ad recently for a budgie with cage for £45. I didn't want to keep the cage forever as it wasn't very big so like you Marianne Marlow I emailed the owner to see if she would let me have the budgie cheaper and I guaranteed that it would go to a good home. The poor budgie had no toys in its cage and plastic perches so I did advise her about that. She was vague in answering my questions about the bird ie was he tame. She wouldn't budge on the price which I felt was overpriced as the cage was only worth about £25 brand new anyway. It was hard but I had to walk away. I then saw the ad for chirpy a couple of weeks later, bird and cage for £15 and very local to me. It wasn't just about the money for me and I hope the budgie did find a good home. I just wish that some people would open their minds rather than focus on the money. That budgie couldn't want for a better owner than you Marianne Marlow. What a shame.

I've just done a search on this Gumtree as I have never bothered with it before, however it is touted as a free Classified Ads website. This means it is a place where things are bought and sold. Now to people that advertise and sell budgies on this website are treating our little friends as a commodity. As distasteful as it is we have to ask is it any worse than a pet shop or breeder selling the little fellas? I do not agree with budgies or any other pet being advertised for sale in this way, it leaves a nasty taste in my mouth. But that is how some human beings exist.

I got my Chirpy Cheep from Gumtree OP. Like you said it's no different than pet shops. I do keep Chirpys previous owners updated so they know he's well cared for. The only thing I don't like on there is the people that clearly have no regard for their animals and give them away. Some even say things like "got to get rid of my dog". That's very distasteful. Why not take them to a rescue?

Like Jane, I have had similar experiences with people on gumtree/preloved. Apart from the money issue, the other thing that really gets me is when they refer to their bird as 'it'. That said, the lady I got Phineas from was nice & well meaning, the young man I got Thomas from was decent & also the man I got Dalai from was nice. In some cases, they perhaps could be keeping their bird/s in a better manner but if they are new to keeping budgies, they often take advice from pet shops which they don't realise isn't the best, so I appreciate their intentions are good.

Agreed, sweetpea; not everyone has, or goes looking for, the knowledge that we all take for granted. It doesn't take much to find out "stuff" .... I do it all the time .... but somehow it doesn't seem to occur to other people. As we don't always know the situation that others might find themselves in, I really don't think we should be so quick to pass judgement. Be a little Christian in your thinking, and imagine that there might be other circumstances, not just money, behind the ad. I do think we are far too quick to jump to conclusions, sometimes.

Hezz, true that we should not jump to conclusions, but drawing on past experience (which is all I have) people do sometimes care more for what they can get for the bird than it's welfare.

Unfortunately, what Marianne Marlow says is true. I know of an ad on gumtree that has been on for at least one year (I saw it when I was looking for Dalai). The owner says they can no longer give the bird the full care it needs, yet would not sell to me without the cage (even though that option was originally mentioned in the ad) & they were given the link to my blog so I could prove she would have a good home. In our email exchange the little girl was referred to as 'it'. Breaks my heart to still see that ad...

For myself, I wouldn't give a bird over to someone wanting "it" for free. To me, that smacks of someone who doesn't feel they are worth paying for, and possibly putting the bird(s) in a situation of possibly being a breeding machine. I would very seriously vet that person and their set-up before I gave up a bird, or any animal, even if it was one I had found. While we know that Marianne's birds are well looked after, not everyone else is going to know that.
